Blown Speaker Replacement

Hi All,

I’ve a MK3.5 and it sounds like the passenger door speaker has blown as it muffled and distorted so not sounding promising.

I could replace it with a stock speaker but gut feeling is this is a convenient time to upgrading both door speakers. Knowing Bose from my hifi days I suspect it is not that simple as just swapping them out.

Is there anything I need to be aware of when changing them and does anyone have any recommendations for speakers for a hifi buff who likes a warm rounded sound.

Thanks

Mike

  1. My model of MX-5 is: NC
  2. I’m based near: Hitchin
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: speakers

i also have an nc (nc2) with a bose system.
the driver’s door base unit was blown when I got it.

i replaced with a second hand bose base unit in the end.
however, I did learn most of the answers to your questions while sorting it out!

ok, the Bose speakers are “wired differently” took me a while to work out what the hell this meant!
basically, the bose speaker and wiring loom have Bose connectors.
so if you want to put in non-bose speakers you have to cut the bose connector off of the loom and then wire normally.

I actually brought a set of aftermarket speakers to put in but because of confusion around bose being wired differently, I got the secondhand bose unit.
I still have the aftermarket speaks and I only want £20 for them but you will have to come and collect them if you want them.
here is the forum thread for them

Thanks for that, I was right everything Bose does has to be the Bose way and makes it difficult for everyone else.

That does help give me a good heads up on what to expect. I may come back to you on the speakers but need to work out what to do as I may change the whole system or might do what you did and just change the speaker for a new/used Bose unit.
