Last year I exchanged a Mk.2 which we had enjoyed for 10 years for a Mk.3 which soon developed a maddening rattle. I thought it was behind the dash, so I removed the radio (great fun! Thank god for the internet!) but found nothing. I took my mechanically savvy neighbour out for a drive, & he reckoned it was coming from inside the trim above the windscreen. We removed the hood locks etc. but realised that removing this trim would not be easy; however we managed to lever the front of the trim down, & saw (& extracted) a torx bolt, the same as those holding the hood locators. Problem solved.
Question; has anyone ever heard of this before, & does anyone have any theories as to how it could possibly have got there? I don’t. Thanks for any answers.
There are 3 hood locating points above the windscreen. I removed the 2 outer ones yesterday in at attempt to get at the space above the plastic trim. All 4 bolts were present, & there is no gap in that area to access the space where we eventually found the bolt.
The centre locating point is different; there are no visible bolts, & I could not see how to remove it, so I cant tell if 1) there is a bolt missing, or 2) there is a big enough gap there for a bolt to get behind the trim.
Can you tell me how this centre locating point is attached, & how to get at whatever holds it in place?
Maybe it has been removed at some point, & a bolt was lost behind the trim.
Is the windscreen original? Possible someone had loosened the catch, shoved the screw there for convenience, forgot about it, and missing screw was later replaced. And yes, probably the catch and trim doesn’t need to be disturbed, but a lot of these so-called professional mechanics can be idiots.
Also, there is an overhead light here, and the trim needs to be disturbed if any repairs are needed.
Just clicked and went straight to it? On my ancient iPad, not sure that would be an issue though? Perhaps just search mellens Miata, it should get you there.
