Bonnet found open this morning

Hello all.

This morning when I went out to use my car I found the bonnet open but still on the catch.

There was nothing missing. No damage and the car was still locked from when I left it the evening before.

The last time I opened the bonnet was around mid August this year.

My question is, are there any known issues with the bonnet catch that anyone has experience of?

Many thanks for any advice in advance.

Jamie.

Yes, pointy smart shoes can catch the release lever when getting out of the car.
Another of the reasons SWMBO doesn’t like driving it. But I can’t see how it happens.

Hi J,
I don’t know how many miles you do a week but that is over 2 months without doing any fluid checks so it is probably the cars way of reminding you to have a look under there!!!

Done this many a time and not notice it…welcome to the club. :grinning:

Yep I have done that more than once, clipped the bonnet release with my toe as I get out!

I’ve twice had the bonnet ping open whilst driving, odd I thought. Both times it’s when I’ve lowered the bonnet and firmly closed it with the palm of my hand. My method now is let the bonnet drop from around 12 inches so it firmly catches, never a problem pinging open again.
Maybe it’s the same with yours, who knows?

I’ve never had mine opo open, and I don’t recall ever catching the release catch, however, size nine docs probably woulnt catch the release.
Like MICKAP, i drop my bonnet from about 8-10 inches.

I’d rather drop it than risk denting it with my palm.

Not sure if it helps but my Mk1 when through a period of bonnet popping. Discovered eventually that the bonnet pull was not returning fully so now when I open the bonnet I give the handle a firm push back. Guess the problem is cable needs lubrication but for the moment it is cured.

Thank you all for your help.

It makes sense that I probably court my trainers fastening loop on the catch as I squeezed out of the car last night.

I usually double check the bonnet is closed Properly if I have opened it, as I have experienced a bonnet pop open on the move in the past.

Many thanks.

Jamie.
