Bonnet insulator - heat, noise or both?

My bonnet insulation is looking a bit tatty in places so I’m wondering about either removing it completely or replacing it. But before I do, I’m just wondering if it’s main purpose on the MX-5 is sound deadening or to protect the bonnet paint (well or both).

If it’s stopping heat from ruining the paint then I should probably leave it or replace it.

I would assume that it’s for insulation and a heat shield.

If it’s beyond repair, then I would replace it.
