Bonnet respray

I am thinking of having the bonnet re sprayed as it has some stone chips and swirls on it.I have been quoted £300.00 inc vat.Does this seem about right?I want a good job done or it will annoy me every time I look at it

Sounds about the going rate.

Paid £150 to have a rear bumper sprayed around 5 years ago, also quoted for my bonnet, that would have been £240 for a Mk1

I have just had a small crease removed, respray and lacquer on the passenger door of my Velocity Red MK3.5 (a first class job) and it cost me £400.

I would not have been happy with anything but perfection, so was happy with the price.

My 2000 mk2 has gone to the car hospital to have major work done today. I decided to go for a full respray as it wasn’t much more than to paint just what is being repaired.

£1200 for a full respray, not the hard top, by a quality garage.

just got a mk3 that has a few issues , front bumper scuffs, and bonnet chips.
been recommended a local chap who had a body shop , now does odd jobs from home,
he is doing my bumper, a one off special…pics to follow, hopefully.
and bonnet for £250.

fingers crossed for me…

bumper issues

Can I ask where it’s being done

Thrussington garage are doing all the repairs and they then send it to the body shop they use.

this is one of their restorations in action …  http://thrussingtongarage.co.uk/mx-5-restoration

Old topic but I think this is relevant.

Storm Ali lifted tiles off my porch roof onto my ND Bonnet. Several areas of bonnet damage that need repair and extensive respray to my Ceramic Metallic paint.

Going in for repair next Monday.

Thing is the ND has an “Active Bonnet” or “Deployable Hood System” (DHS) that reduces head injury to pedestrians in a frontal impact. Sensors in the bumper activate two gas propelled actuators to lift the rear of the bonnet.

I don’t know if the repairs may need removal of the bonnet, which in turn might possibly affect the actuators.

Should I be concerned and mention this to the coach repair workshop?

Yes, I would definitely mention it.

Danger aside if they do remove the bonnet and I am suggesting they will definitely need to, you need to ensure that the active bonnet system is decommissioned and recommissioned correctly.

.  Hi R,

Not clear as to why you would have to decommission the system just to take the bonnet off. The actuators are bolted to the body not the bonnet. If they were to ‘go off’ with the bonnet removed it would have the same result as if the bonnet was just raised.

I personally would just unbolt the bonnet, but I am always eager to learn.

Should have looked under the bonnet in the first place. I now see that the actuators are mounted to the inner guards. They are several inches in front of the rear bonnet hinges.

It seems to me that when “fired” the actuators might exert some force on a cleverly positioned fulcrum and extend the rear bonnet hinges to pop the rear of the bonnet upwards.

Can’t see how removing the bonnet will set any of this in motion.

If this type of arrangement is present in other car manufacturers models the coachwork doing the repairs may already be familiar with it.

At the risk of insulting them I will certainly mention this to the coachworks when I leave it in for repairs.

I hope that they spray it to match the paint that is on the rest of the car, not just spray with the OEM colour. If they just pray with OEM colour it will probably be a different shade due to the original colour will have faded some what.

Have just realised that your car is red, a really good colour for fading.

The colour of my last mx5 (NC) was Copper Red, but this one is a two year old Ceramic Metallic ND, regularly clayed and polished to keep as near new as possible.

The Ceramic Metallic paint finish is a light grey/silver designed to emphasis the different surfaces of the car body by changing appearances of the surfaces under varying light.

The Coachworks doing the work does work for all the major car insurers and has the PAS125 Kitemark. Indeed it was the owner who pointed out to me the different shadings in the different panels and bumpers when he first inspected the damage.

But I take your point and am aware that the OEM colour may not be 100% match to the existing paint due to shade variations.

I assume that OEM colour will be used, and I am just praying that Mazda’s claim that Ceramic Metallic emphasis the different surfaces of the car and the Coachwork comments that this is the case that all will be well despite any difference in the OEM paint shading to my original

Will comment again when the job is done.

Thanks for your comment Pollyanna made me realise I needed to up date my vehicle in my profile.

Damage repaired and respray done 5 days ago.

Really pleased with the outcome.

Colour match looks perfect to me (Ceramic).

Although damage limited to a few specific areas on the bonnet the whole bonnet was resprayed along with the upper parts of both wings.

Although there was no damage to the wings I was told that this was to “blend in”.

I can only assume the bonnet was removed, but in any case no problem with the “Active Bonnet” either.
