Hi guys i have just bought my beautiful MX5 NC , its the sport version with the folding electric hard top. i would love to put a carrier on the back , ive been told that i cant because of the folding roof , is that true or are there some that are designed for use with this model ? Im really new to this so im really not knowledgeable in this area so any advice would be greatly appreciated
watch the roof action as you fold the roof. That will answer what boot lid space is available
I’ve used these Roadster Bags for years and can get loads in there for two of us, for a week away.

There is also room behind the seats for small items.
To answer your question.
Yes, you can fit a rack, depending on which one of course on the boot but the issue IS that if you put luggage on (that’s the point) you can’t open and close the roof because it will foul and be expensive.
So in my opinion it’s pointless.
I have a “Bootbag” for extended trips (as others) and works extremely well.
I have mine fitted so I can open and close the roof.
Also if stopping at say a dodgy service area you can simply unclip and put it on the front passenger seat and then put back on.
It’s only a couple of minutes honest.
Those boot cases are okay but if you measure and buy soft bags you will get more in.
PS a bargain on eBay at present.
They are the same bag for all the cars by the way.
The 50 Litre ones.
You need to ask yourself first, do I really need that extra room by putting a rack or bag on the boot lid?
We’ve managed over 9 years without, just soft squeezable bags in the boot and we’ve done some lengthy stays away from home, some up to 3 weeks. You see quite a few posts saying about these used luggage carriers, used once.
Suck it and see being new to the car, it’s surprising how much squeezes in to the boot, behind the seats etc.
But if needs must I go with the easily removable boot bag as mentioned, especially if you want to whip it off quick to put the roof down.
I use an NB boot rack on my NC PRHT, fits perfectly and if the fixings nearest the front are positioned 175mm away from the edge of the boot, then the retractable roof just clears the rack.
As someone has mentioned previously, there is limited space on the rack for luggage if you still want the roof up and down, but as a contingency for long trips (flat tyre for example), then I am of the philosophy of having it and not using it rather than needing it and not having it.
Also the proper NC Mazda boot rack with the integrated brake light also fits, as explained on the MX-5 Parts website. A gentleman at the recent national MX-5 rally at Gaydon told me that the distance measurement (defined in first paragraph) needs to be 220mm
Hope that helps

Thank you
You might consider one of these.
The point is it’s removable, easily.
3 suction cups- we did 6 week trip to Lagos in the Algarve from N.Ireland and had no trouble with it. Took it off every night, and if we left the car anywhere dodgy.
Ours is a soft top, but I believe it will fit the PRHT… but may need to be removed during the roof up/down process?? Not sure - anyone else have a revo-rack with PRHT?
As others have said, it is possible to manage without a bootrack with the right luggage and efficient use of the various spaces. Here’s our luggage from a recent two-week trip to France.
The bespoke three piece luggage set (not cheap - but less than the cost of a bootrack) fits in the boot with room to spare for camera, coats, cleaning kit etc. The wife doesn’t go anywhere without her pillow - that fits behind the passenger seat and the laptop bag with passports, documents etc goes behind the drivers seat. And all the travel kit (hi-vis vests, first aid kit, spare bulbs etc) fits in the various cubby holes.
More than enough stuff for two weeks, and of course all is secure in the car if you stop for a comfort break on the motorway.
I have the Revo Rack with my PRHT.
The roof will open and close no problem with no luggage attached to the rack itself but you’ll likely need to remove the rack if it’s loaded up and you want to operate the roof.
That being said the 3 suction cups make that really easy, I just pop them off and hold the rack + luggage and put the roof up/down and then stick it back on.
So I’d definitely recommend it.
We managed to take our 4m bell tent, folding table, gas stove, 2 camping chairs and loads of other camping bits with us last month with no issue. Cramped but not a problem!
No problem with most fixed boot carriers opening and closing the roof provided you don’t have any luggage on the rack.
