Boot dimensions

Hi I’m new to the site and I am looking to buy a Mk3 MX-5 but i have a quandry!

I am in a rock band and I need to be able to fit a guitar amp that is 14" x 24" x 12"  (36cm x 61cm x 31cm)  into the boot. Can anyone tell me if this is going to fit? I realase that the boot is an irregular shape so i need to know if the boot appature and depth are enough to fit the amp in.

Many thanks

The only safe way to confirm this IMO is to have a thin cardboard box made up to fit in the boot to try and see if it fits.

Or when you go for a test drive (you are going to test drive, aren’t you?) you could take the amp with you to see if it fits. By far the safest way!

I drive a mk2, so the dimensions are probably going to be a bit different, I’m afraid, but I think the only one you might have trouble with is the height, and I think 31cm would fit in a mk2 fairly easily.

The MK3 boot is deeper than that of the
MK2, But it is no as big front to back, and the opening is smaller. I
will get some proper measurements later.

A trial fit is the only way to be sure.

Thanks for the replys. I will mock up a box and take it down to the local mazda dealer. I just wanted to check to see if I was on a hiding to nothing. I think the depth is going to be the problem. Would be great if someone could measure that for me.

Thanks

I might have to take back what I said earlier… I have a box of stuff at work which is 30cm high, 40 deep and 55 wide, and it /just/ fitted in the boot - the top of it got squashed slightly. So I suspect your amp probably wouldn’t quite fit.

That said! This was without removing the spare wheel - removing that would add a fair bit of available height. Also, Mark says the mk3 has a deeper boot, so you might be OK. I think it’s close enough that you’re going to have to try it, I’m afraid.

I assume you’ve considered putting it on the passenger seat? Lots of space there!

Hmm i could use the passenger seat but that would mean putting the girlfriend in the boot…it is tempting ;)

Not entirely sure about mk3, but the size but the parcel shelf behind the seats will probably fit your amp
Have a try putting the amp there, but it may mean you need to give up chrome roll bars

I fitted a small ‘on board’ suit case onto the parcel shelf of MK2 (no roll bars) and it was fine
Also tried few times fitting some 15" alloys with tyres and again it was good fit (trust me a MX5 can fit a set of 15" alloys if no passenger)

Anyway, go and try is the best thing you can do. good luck

I’ve not tried to fit my girlfriend in the boot yet, however I did almost manage to fit one of my friends in there! He’s about 5’10, but quite skinny. Unfortunately, his hips were slightly too wide, and I couldn’t shut the boot. Well. I say couldn’t, it’s quite possibly I could’ve, but it would probably have been bad for both him and the car! Also, if I’d taken the spare wheel out, he’d easily have fitted. Possibly slightly less comfortable though!

I think I could probably fit my sister in there…

My guitar amp has dimensions width 590mm, height 480mm + handle and feet, depth 280mm, and I just can’t get it in the boot.
It gets stuck at an angle trying to get it under the front of the boot. If it was a little slimmer in depth or a little shorter it would probably fit.

If you do get the amp in the boot, where are you going to put the guitar?

[edit] I see from your original post that your amp has a depth of 31cm. I think that’s going to be too fat to get over the lip of the boot and under the far side (where the boot hinges are), since it’s 30mm deeper than mine and I can’t get it in.

hmm it isnt looking too good for me at the moment then. The guitar can go on the front seat so i’m not too worried about that. But it does look like I am going to struggle to get the amp to fit into the boot :frowning: Maybe a water proof cover and a boot rack is the way to go?

I have been out and measured the boot
now. However the boot is so irregular that a trial fitting is the
only way to be sure.

Boot Opening 13" x 24" - It
is wider but then the length (13") is reduced.

There is a recess in the boot floor
measuring 14" x 22" however the sides of this recess are
not parallel and the measurement is taken at the narrowest point.

The depth is 13" at the rear
(shallowest) of the car and into the recess.

On the basis of this I would say it is
unlikely that it will fit. But it still might be worth having a go.

I have to say that I much preferred the
boot on the MK2 and I almost did not change my car because of
this.

Well thanks for all of your input, it looks like I need to have a think around how I can make this work. Cheers
