OK, it seems that however minor the question the advice is great so thanks to everyone for the responses ( as a new mx5 owner)
BUT
I am due to start out on a 700 mile trip to the UK and am undecided if there is a best way round to fit the boot rack i.e. does the high lip on the rack go near the window or not, is it a matter of preference? or is there a correct way. luggage elastics or straps? for one soft bag
You don’t say which rack you have, but by ‘high lip’ I assume you mean the raised part of the rack? This goes to the rear, or away from the rear window, it’s to stop luggage falling off the back of the car. I have the proper mazda rack, which is best for using straps rather than elastic, and we went into France twice with a holdall strapped on the rack with no problems at all - except when it rained - but fortunately the bag was pretty waterproof, if your luggage isn’t, then cover it with a bin bag or something similar. Halfords have suitable straps, for a reasonable price, if you haven’t got any yet. HTH, have a good trip.
Not necessarily as this style rack from MX5parts will only fit with the raised part to the rear of the car so that blows that arguement out of the water.
I always fitted mine the wrong way in some peoples opinion but the raised part is nowhere near strong enough to stop the luggage flying forward anyway IMO. Secured with leather straps & ratchet straps for good measure.
Now i prefer the “Boot Bag” a much better solution as you can keep it in the car so it`s always with you if needed. It also gives better rear vision than a rack.
OK, it looks better with the lip to the rear, however obviously rear view is blotted out. We bought the car in the UK last year and drove it home to South West France with no problem, now thinking of visiting UK again from Devon to Scotland
I find the visibility to the rear is better with the lip at the back because the rear edge of the boot is lower than the front edge, as long as the luggage is fuuly secured it isnt going to come through the rear window
The Mk3 bootrack is designed with the raised edge at the front; you can tell this because it comes with a brakelight. I suspect that the Mk1/Mk2 is meant to go that way around.
I’ve fitted mine both was around. It certainly looks better the ‘wrong’ way around. As I carry tyres on it, I find that they overhang too much, pulling the weight too far back, so usually fit it with the raised edge at the back.
