I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: Brake hoses
I am reasonably confident that my braking issue is due to a collapsed front brake hose. They’re about £30 for a Pagid part and a I suppose it makes sense to replace both.
I want to farm this out to a garage, but uncertain what is a fair price.
One of these Facebook Mechanics, ClickMechanics, is coming up with £310 to replace both hoses, and is estimating 1-2 hours per hose. Is that reasonable? I’m expecting this is the sort of job any back street mechanic can handle (replace hoses, replace fluid and bleed). I will decline offers to fit new discs and pads.
I would have ordinarily had a go muyself but
I have a steeply sloping drive and a tiny garage. I am not confident about lifting a car and bleeding the brakes on the drive.
The brake hoses are getting on for 30 years old, and I’m expecting the unions to be pretty rusty. I am not confident in my range of tools that I won’t end up rounding a nut, or snapping a hardline, leaving me in a pickle.
Depends on the labour rate and parts price, but I’d think yes. Pop round to mine with a case of beer and the parts and I’ll do it for you on a Saturday morning
Not sure it will really make it to Cambridge (the offside front gets hot quick), but thanks for the offer. Universal labour rates seem to be £100 an hour around here. Euro Car parts are listing the hoses for about 30 plus the tax each.
I had the same issue and replaced the hoses, which failed to cure the problem.
The front caliper slider pin bore had become oval, due to the heat and I had to replace them before it cured the issue.
2 hours per hose seems a long time. When I had my front caliper changed on my NC it took 20 mins from start to finish so I can’t see a hose taking long.
