Does anyone know if you can get the backing plates for the pads of Mk2.5 big discs. The piston side plates are rusting through. I’ll try Mazda tomorrow but of course they’ll only sell them with the pads won’t they (which I already have).
Try andrew at autolinkuk.co.uk,no item is to small, ring them because the web site will not list everything.
Kind regards
Mazda don’t do seperate shim kits for pads (their pads already come with
them); I’ve never had much luck fitting Mazda shims to non-Mazda pads
(they shift around).
Why not use an anti-squeal paste? No need use a rusty old metal shim. Bendix do “blue goo”, but there are alternatives from Brembo etc; check your local motor factors.

I think BMW and VW dealers sell little sachets of this stuff as well.
So is this the same as copper grease?
I may just cut some out of sheet metal. I only need the ones on the piston side. The outers are ok.
Can someone tell me what the small U shaped clip does that is attached to the bottom of the offside inner pad?
I don’t have sport brakes on my car but I do run without any shims on the back of the brake pads (just a bit of copper grease) and it’s fine. In fact if anything the brakes feel better for it.
I heard a rumour that the U shaped clip is a “squealer”. Apparently it makes a squealing sound to warn you when the pads are near the wear limit.
A squealer? Sounds about right. At least I shall know which way round to fit it.
I’ve just made a pair of backing plates from an old stainless guard from a barbeque. They look quite nice. I’ll fit those on the outsides.
You can use copper ease, but these greases are a lot more viscous, and provide more of a cushioning effect.
Bendix-made pads come with a plastic stick on shim. That seems to be the general trend now.
