- My model of MX-5 is: __
- I’m based near: __
- I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __MOT advisory says brake pipe corroded , covered in grease or other material(from offside rear flexi hose to near side rear flexi hose. Not had chance to go to garage yet, any advice please on likely cost/scale of the job?
It’s a 2004 2.5
You can buy the pipe ready made up from Mazda fitting probably 1 hour including a brake bleed.
Does it need replacing?
If the corrosion is only surface the pipe may still be perfectly serviceable and not require replacement.
The grease or other substance could easily be black Waxoyl applied as a measure against further corrosion.
Sometimes the MOT tester feels obliged to remark on things but they aren’t necessarily a safety concern.
Perhaps further investigation might yield a solution.
Cheers,
Guy
Edit* I forgot to ask, have you had the car long? Have you owned it since the last MOT?
Thanks.
Sorry Robbie, I tried to do that ,but no joy from MX5 parts they could not supply , they reccomended a local garage
Ah, OK. Maybe it’s no longer produced then. I got one recently (ish) with part number NA01-43-670C. If it is indeed no longer available, then it’ll be a case of getting one made up. Shouldn’t break the bank. As said though, I wouldn’t replace parts based solely on a MOT advisory, get it properly inspected.
Thanks, have owned the car about 17 years, it’s 20 years old today! You are correct regarding it not being a safety concern, they are a reputable garage and said it would have failed MOT if it was.
MOT due again next month so will see what needed then.
Will do Robbie, thanks for advice,
If you can’t get the OEM part, this is an option: https://bofiracing.co.uk/running-gear/brake-hydraulics/brake-lines/hel-performance-rear-subframe-hard-line-delete-for-mazda-mx-5-na-nb/
I’ve had tyres on a car made an advisory , which I was fuming about as there was nothing wrong with them, at an MOT. I dont like simple advisories on my car. The tyres actually sailed the next MOT a year later without any issues. As for brake pipes on a 20 year old car, then I would check them when serviced as they wont just corrode in a short period of time. brake pipes can easily be made to fit cars and peace of mind would be sensible to get them checked out.
A friends BMW failed on brake pipes at 14 yrs old. He thought it was a bit harsh, but found the real issue was hidden on the plastic pipe cover than stopped them getting damaged under the car. This kept all the rain, grit and salt on the pipes . He was almost thankful it failed as these were hidden until he stripped them out and were totally rotten,
Any pictures? lets see problem/concern,
MOT stations will slap some cr*p on these advisories , when being to finicky , you maybe changing something and giving yourself more hassle than needed, i see it all the time.
Togs hit it on the head spot on.

Hi ya from
2005[June] 2.5 owner …also owned mine for 17 years
Happy Birthday to both our vehicles
“Brake Pipe Corroded and Covered in Grease” came up on my Advisories in 2022 by expert MX-5 garage [Club Members]
As TOGS said my Advisory continued with “light corrosion and underseal applied to all brake pipes”
However in 2023 my non-specialist garage passed her with No Advisories
Nevertheless identified during Service 2024 that her N/S/R brake caliper needed replacing
Cost £185.00
Now I’m not mechanically savvy enough to recognize whether these two things are related so over to another poster on this thread
Good to chat with a fellow long time owner of a 2.5
I always used to put a bit of grease then spray old engine oil on customers brake pipes when they started to get surface corrosion on them it just helps protect them.
Thanks for that Bullit. Happy birthday to your MX5 too!!!
Cheers Karen
Thanks
Sorry no pictures, can’t get under car at my age! Will have to look when on ramp at garage.
