Brake warning light on

  1. My model of MX-5 is: __NC 2011
  2. I’m based near: __Newcastle
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __Brake warning light illuminated

My brake warning light came on yesterday. It§s the sam light that comes on when you pull the hand brake but its a little dimmer. Pulling the handbrake on makes it bright again…

So thinking it’s a low brake fluid issue as the pads will have ward I fitted some new pads at the read today, the front ones were done about 4 months ago. Fluid was just under the max line when finished but I topped it off to the max anyway…

Seemed Ok for a few miles but now the light is back ! I know theres no pad sensors, the brake lights work )so pressuming not a brake light switch issue.

Could tis be the fluid level sensor is defective? I’ve not sorted the connector yet to check that.

There are no fault codes stored either…]

Any help appreciated…

Could it be that the point in the handbrakes travel that the light activates is only just above where it rests as you are driving? Might just need a smidge of adjustment

Bit of extra fiddling just now and the light is only on (dim) when the lights are turned on…

All brake lights are working fine !

Agree with brilliant BlackBirdy. Check the handbrake switch. This may need adjusting or replacing

I’ve pulled up the handbrake cover and disconnected the wire…

The normal “bright” brake light then doesn’t work as you’d expect but it’s still on dimly . Only when the side / headlights are on as before. really odd !

Also pulled the connector from the brake fluid reservoir… Same problem.

Seems to have resumed normal service having unplugged and reinserted both the handbrake switch plug and then the fluid reservoir plug several times. That initially didn’t help however the last thing I did was to partially lower the PRHT roof… probably a total coincidence …but after going back out to go to Sainsbury’s it seems ok !

Will keep an eye out and report in …

It has been -6 to -2 here all day so maybe just a glitch in the matrix as it approaches 80K.

IMHO, A very dodgy thing to have done in the temperature range you spoke about. The cog mechanisms are made of a plastic and if frozen (of which there’s a good chance they will have been) could have been Night Night Vienna…

Totally aware of that but thanks anyway. I was in the warm garage at a a nice 17 degrees most of the afternoon and tonight so no drama ensued !
