brakedown /loss of spark

Fine Ian will watch for email    mick

Try a cam sensor !!!

Mick well done another one lives to drive another day

CAS = Cam Angle Sensor. Also changed the Powertrain Control Module but have been advised to put the old one back before I take it to the Auto Electrician which I’m hoping will be early next week. Still no spark.

Sorry to here this Bruce as mine is running great one other thought is the igniter box on the os inner wing please forgive met if you have changed it . I got a bit paranoid until I hit the right bit regards mick

Bruce have you double checked your fuses two specific fuses power the ECU,the first is under the bonnet labelled BTN in the main fuse box.The other is in the auxiliary fuse box in the drivers foot well, could be marked Room or possibly something in Japanese on imports. The car will not run if these have failed,if nothing else it is another one to eliminate.
Kind Regards.
Ian.

Thanks Ian.
Checked both. Both good.

My orig problem is cured , very happy Mick

Bruce the next thought that arises is are you certain that all the components which you have changed are good?
Kind Regards.
Ian.

I Had this on my MK2 Cut out, Leave it Started, Run Ok, Stopped repeated all this over time Tried everything THEN A Sparks found a Wire going into the Main Fuse And relay Box under the bonnet was Frayed ( Wires Enter From Beneath The Box) He Replaced The Wire And Car Ran Sweet until I sold it 12 months Later.

I rang Green Flag to get the car dragged to the auto electrician but the chap who turned up said “I’m here to start it. I wasn’t asked to tow the car.”  Having explained everything I had done and the fact that the OBD wasn’t working either he said “Yes but…” Having checked lots of things he said" I#ll just take all the fuses in the fuse box out and put them back in again." When he had finished he said, “The only thing I didn’t put back in was the Lights on Buzzer,”  which had worked when he checked the lights.

Then it started.

And the OBD was working again. I drove it to the Auto Electrician who agreed with me that nothing in the fuse box could possibly prevent a spark - and isolate the OBD - and we agreed that, should it happen again I will get dragged to his premises, day or night, and he would have a look at it.

So still a bit of a mystery. I’m just going to run and run and run in it to see if I can get it to do it again because it’ll be a while before I trust it to get me where I want to go.

Congratulations Bruce,do you think that removing the fuses was sufficient to allow the system to re-boot when they were replaced and was this exercise just confined to the under bonnet fuses.I am thinking this is one well worth remembering in case i should suffer a similar problem in the future. Will you please keep us informed if your problems are now over.I am new to the MX5 scene and wish to learn as much as possible about them.
Congrats again,Kind Regards.
Ian.

Well Ian, I had removed the BTN fuse for the recommended 30 seconds to reset the CPU and pressed the brake pedal which is another way of resetting, I understand. The car is running well although I need to check the timing because I changed the CAS but it sounds and feels good.

We shall see.

Thanks Bruce i am not sure whether you think like me,you see i could not rest until i had put the original CAS back on just to see if it was defective. Is there any likelyhood that this may happen?
I will email Mick in case he misses your good news on the Forum,i wonder if you are prepared to let me know the general area you live.
Kind Regards.
Ian.

As the Kate Bush song went---- It’s Mystery!!! glad you are up and running again mick

I’m in Bath Ian. And I am pretty confident that the original problem had nothing to do with the CAS but, having fitted a new O ring to the cleaned up one I put in, I’m currently in no rush to do any more spannering for a week or to.

Let’s hope I’m not posting again with this problem any time soon.

Cheers

John
