- My model of MX-5 is: 2009 NC2 phrt
- I’m based near: west London
- I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on:
Attached pictures of the problem
The exhaust pipe has broken off just behind the mid resonator (so before the muffler) and is obnoxiously loud. The replacement mid pipes online all seem suggest that the old pipe has to be cut and the new pipe sleeved over as there doesn’t seem to be any connection/flange in the pipe between the cat and the mid pipe’s resonator. However the garage I went to wanted to replace the entire thing up to the muffler (cat + midpipe + resonator) for 1100(!). To be clear, the cat and the muffler are both fine, its only the middle.
My question is can I get away with a cheaper fix with the mx5parts mid pipe: Exhaust Centre Pipe Repair Section, MX5 Mk3 3.5 3.75
Or will it be necessary to replace the whole thing to avoid trouble down the line.

Yes that’s the part to repair that section, by all accounts it works well. Measure, cut, fit.
Be prepared to have a fight with the flange bolts holding the back box but at least you will have that section off the car for better access.
When if my centre pipe brakes .I will replace with stainless steel . OK it will cost more but job done no more rotten pipe’s it will out last the MX…
I managed to get another garage to have a look for me and they suggested it could be welded and clamped but I think the rest of the pipe is too rusty to bother, so we’ll go ahead and use the replacement pipe. thanks for the help

Same happened to me last night - thought an earplug had come loose but coming off the motorway I realised it wasn’t that!
The back box has similar corrosion, so I suspect that will follow shortly. What’s a good recommendation here for a stainless NC system that doesn’t add volume, please?
