Buckled Alloys On My New MX5

Hello, well have had my car a few weeks now, 2007 reg bought from Supercar Classics who specialise in MX5’s. I phoned them about the steering wobble as they gave me a three month warranty. They told me to take it to ATS so the wheels could be balanced which I did and it turns out that three out of four wheels are buckled, not badly but enough. I phoned Supercar and passed the phone over to the mechanic who confirmed for me. Now they said bring the car and we’ll fit new wheels but I said it’s three and half hour drive so they are going to courier some up to me and they don’t want the old ones in exchange because they are no good only to scrap. Apparently it’s common with low profile tyres to cause this type of damage by hitting potholes etc. Should I have the wheel alignment checked also? Is this as common as they say? How can an experienced dealer not spot this before sale?, I never test drove the car before purchase, my drive back home was my test drive. Will they stick to their word and deliver the wheels? Watch this space.

Watching this space, astonished that anyone would hand over money for a secondhand motor without a test drive.

What size wheels and tyres are they sending, I would tend to go for the smallest standard type wheel fitted with the highest profile standard tyre. Big diameter wheels fitted with very low profile tyres are generally more susceptible to damage and buckling than smaller wheels on our potholed roads.
Wheels can sometimes be straightened by a specialist.
I also would not buy a second hand car without a test drive, especially one purchased a 7 hour round trip away.

Caveat emptor !

I have dealt with them, and I think you will find that they are good to their word.

You will also find that most alloy wheels are not straight.

If you want your old set straightening, send them to me.

They’re 17 inch wheels, when they arrive i’m taking them to get the tyres i have swapped over and balanced. Should i get wheels aligned?

yes
