Buying advice…

So I’m starting on the journey of getting my first MX5, hopefully a soft top NC…

I’ve been scouring the internet and found what looked to be a decent price for a fairly low mileage NC with the right engine and spec I’m after, also in a nice racing green colour that I’ve not seen many in…

However, having checked the MOT history it seemed to sail through until early 2021 when the rot started in the usual places, front and rear subframe and suspension…

Now it seemed to have a lot of that fixed ie, the latest MOT was a pass with a few advisories for light service corrosion…

Generally would that be expects for a car of this age, 58 plate…

I’m expecting that whatever I end up with will need a trip to a specialist to have the underside treated and protected but i guess im just trying to set my own expectations really…

The last thing I want is to get something and then find it needs a new subframe and all new suspension etc…

I have asked the dealer for what was done to fix the failures on the MOT… breakdown below…

Any tips or advise would be greatly appreciated…

Just look for one that has a better MOT history… Plenty of them out there…

Have a look at the Z Sport for sale on this forum, MOT history not bad.
As always check the underside for the dreaded rust or rot on any ageing NC.

All good advice. Walk away from this one as there are plenty available but be aware that you are looking at 10 year old plus vehicles and you should be more concerned with condition not specification. Before you look at any others obtain the reg number and check past MOTs. Reject any that have significant rust advisories straight away unless you want to start spending much more on fixing them or can weld and paint vehicle bodywork yourself.

Walk away and don’t look back!

Thanks for the advise all,

Yeah I agree it’s not even worth going to look at with those kind of issues…

I agree with going for condition rather than spec, although trying to get the missus on board with the idea of a 2 seater has taken some time and heated leather seats was a condition for me even getting a look in at getting something…

I have checked a few more and the majority showed no advisories for corrosion at all so just a case of searching for the right one…

The search continues…
