Buzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Driving me mad!

  1. My model of MX-5 is: __ 2006 NC 2.0
  2. I’m based near: __
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __

Any suggestions where to look next welcome.

Annoying noise from somewhere near my left ear, I’ve tried damping tape on the soft-top latch, cubby latch and door, hood catch, windbreak (several places) and roll hoop covers.

Nothing is touching the seats, the seat belts are firmly located.

I can’t reach anything when driving to stop the buzzing.

And yes, today I turned the stereo up (pretty crap isn’t it?)

Thanks

Does this happen only when the roof is up?

Mine has a buzz coming from the latch, took me ages to locate it. If I press firmly on the latch it stops.

No, roof down. Not driven with the roof up for months so not sure if it’s there with the roof up!

Thanks for the reply

I had a similar problem - turned out to be the plastic trim that surrounds the roof latch handle.
Hope this helps
Darryl

Next time you hear it, push firmly on the cubby box thing that’s between the seats, if it stops, report back

You don’t have a passenger offering helpful driving advice do you? Solo runs can reduce the noise coming from the left of the car.

My buzzing was coming from the rear view mirror.

I know this is a long shot and maybe no help at all, but I recently fitted an Alloy gear knob which constantly loosens itself slightly and vibrates with a distinctive Buzz, so I am always tightening it with my left hand, so try holding or pushing things when driving to see if it stops, which might help you locate the noise.

Boz

Ive found that pushing hard on the panel behind the seats stops it, but thats not really practical whilst driving…

There was a tech bulletin 2006 cars regarding centre cubby lock and striker plate. miata.net/garage/tsb/

Double sided tape in the hole and force it on.

Or blue loctite

which hole?

Bosley’s Hole

Ha! :joy:

I had something similar. Turned out to be seat belt buckle was vibrating.

Had to drive with the roof up today for the first time

Buzzing is dreadful and definitely coming from the rear panel. Elbow pressing back between the seats and it goes away. I’m thinks a spongy spacer of some sort will help, do I really have to take the whole panel, off or is there some access via a cubby or something?

I had similar noise on my 2006, cured the noise by following repair procedure in this Technical Service Bulletin.

Thanks for the above. Panel off then, it can wait a while though.

Bzzzzzzz. Bzzzz. Bzzzzzzzzzzz

I didn’t have to remove the panel completely, remove front covers of roll bar hoops, catch for central console door and a few clips then pull panel out far enough wedged with a block of wood to get hand down back of panel to get too the clip that’s causing the noise, I removed clip greased it well and refitted, I also found screws loose on the central console door striker plate. Just take care in reassembly to make sure all other clips go back in properly. I haven’t had a single squeak since doing this.
