Sorry, Malc!
What I mean is that the 1 cm thick piece of reticulated foam is not something that is intended by Mazda to be used under the mesh on an MX-5, so there is no good asking for it at the dealer, in Halfords, or any other shop.
Blue Agave must have cut to size and used a piece of foam that was sold for a different purpose, and I am asking him what he actually bought.

I used some fine mesh in the gaping hole under the scuttle cover
I then went onto cleaning the internal filter, well mesh. It was a bit of a swine to do but it was full of ■■■■. So although very awkward a/c works a lot better, Malc is correct though there is no pollen filter. Just a tip, once the easy side of the door is released the other side is very difficult. I used a bucket handle off fence life bucket. The little nib at the end that slots into the bucket was perfect.
My sense of humour appears to be ever so slightly off target.

Great! Thanks. It seems to be more common in the UK, but there is some on the German Ebay and Amazon sites.

Thought worth posting on this thread instead of making a new thread. So if there is no pollen filter that is very very dangerous because you just get the PM2.5 straight into the cabin. Bit of a death trap?
I have set the air to recirculate. I know it is working because the windows steam up. I am going to get my PM 2.5 measurement device out to see if it is working air-tight. I would have done this anyway even if there was a in-cabin/pollen filter. But how can Mazda by law get away with this when we know how dangerous air pollution is? I am baffled. I don’t find this acceptable at all.
Thanks.
There are laws that govern limits to inner-city air pollution. If this is deemed dangerous then how an earth can they not deem it dangerous when it is building up inside the cabin? This is beyond logic. And for the Japanese to do this? When as part of their culture they wear masks outdoors…
I don’t put the top down much to be honest. Not once actually since I bought it. Well actually the once when the delivery man wanted to see the mechanism in operation…

You have purchased the wrong car or you are pulling our plonkers.

If it’s that important something to check before buying the car? There are cars on sale with true HEPA levels of filtering, a search will inform.
Enjoy the driving experience, it’s what the MX-5 is about.
I never even thought a car would come without one! It never crossed my mind. But putting the air to recirculate will solve the problem right?
Thanks!
I honestly have not put the roof down. The pollution is awful from trucks and buses. But I think putting the air to recirculate solves the problem? Certainly seemed to steam up the windows but I read on the forum that someone doubted whether it was truly always closed.
Of course the roof will come down but only on quite country lanes. Who wants the roof open in traffic?
Thanks!
EDIT* to the people who inserted the extra form into that square/circle compartment. Where is this located? And does this just feed to the air-conditioning or does it also bypass into the basic air functions for the interior?
The filter is under the front scuttle on the passenger side. You need to prise up the oval black plastic plug, unscrew the posidrive or m8 bolt. Open the bonnet and unclip the rear scuttle to bonnet rubber, then lift the scuttle panel and its under there. You have two push clips to be able to remove the black plastic rim. I work in air conditioning, so have a huge roll of cirasyn synthetic filter media which is 5mm thick. So, cut a piece to fit under the black rim and spray glued it in place. I then found some mesh in the shed, which when cut sandwiched between the underside of the filter media and car bulkhead. I then reused the 2 clips to pop it all together. I then tool the lower dash apart , as could see rubbish in the air filter mesh in the fan, through the bulkhead. I didnt remove the filter due to the amount of cables and struggled to unclip them, so pulled it almost all the way out and a Henry hoover with a snorkle made short work of the leaves that came out when I pulled it forward. Then re-assembled and all good.

Can the form filters used be of a quality like other cars? Some are basic white filters some are carbon which are better. Will this affect all the air modes in the car? So not just the air-conditioning?
The video linked helped and if you watch it youtube recommends another that is also useful.
The filter media I used, we fit to precision air supplies in laboratories that we install ac and maintain them. This was the wrong thickness stuff which is why I have about 100 metre roll at work doing nothing. It is extremely minimal in its restriction to airflow. Inside the ‘tunnel’ heading to the fan is the resistor pack for the fan and they get hot. I didn’t want to put anything thicker , material wise and the mesh is 10mm by 20 mm , that will also be less restrictive than finer filters or mesh.
Foam filters are an option but it depends on how much the airflow could be slowed and if it will affect the resistor pack . Depends on what you find to use to be honest.
Media we use id like this:

This link is really good. Really curious to know what quality filter they use.
This is a really good video on the subject. Amazing the work some people will go to, to add features.
Thanks.
