Cabin/pollen filter mx-5 RF

Hi everyone,

Is there a need to replace the cabin/pollen filter on my MX-5 RF 2017 plate? I read that it can be removed, cleaned and blasted with air and reinstall it!

Mx5parts doesn’t seem to stock these… more googling to do!

Hi MickAP,

I wondered after seeing this on YouTube.

That’s not a cabin filter just a square of mesh, presumably to catch any bits of debris that may enter the system.
You wouldn’t be going to those lengths to replace that, it wasn’t very dirty coming out.

MickAP,

thanks again!

I can confirm there is no pollen filter on any ND models, that is why MX5parts don’t have any. :grinning:

It was referred to as a dust filter by Mazda when the ND came out. It can be removed and and debris can be cleared from it. As you can see It’s quite a course mesh so I’m not sure why they called it a dust filter, more of a leaf filter I’d say. You have to take quite a lot of the dash off to get to it.

Dont worry, no filter, no problem, just make sure the drains are clear especially if you park under trees or such like. Enjoy your car.

  1. My model of MX-5 is: 2015 ND
  2. I’m based near: Edinburgh
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __

Checking the cabin air inlet vent underneath the windscreen scuttle panel and found it blocked with leaves at the bottom, now I have to remove the filter gauze from inside the cabin to give this a clean which is a bit more involved.
Had the car from new and full Mazda service history but looks like this has never been removed for cleaning in 8 years.

The air inlet at the top is open but has a plastic surround that looks as if it is meant to locate a filter - Is there an aftermarket filter that can be fitted in this opening that will prevent debris from falling down and collecting in the internal gauze as this would save a lot of hassle in future

David,

I think you will find the answers you now seek were given in the links I provided you with (particularly the video) in this thread.

David no pollen filter. The hole is for a/c. I cleaned mine out today & put a mesh in the cover. Will keep all the leaves & other ■■■■ out. Just got to do the internal one now

Just hoping right photo has uploaded.

I got my filter from the USA (I think Amazon), but there must be a UK supplier.

David

Thanks everybody - managed to remove the internal filter ok and was not as difficult as it looks, this was very clogged with debris and great improvement in air flow and will fit the mesh under the scuttle to prevent problems in future ,

I added a plastic mesh with a 10mm foam filter underneath.

When you say “underneath”, do you mean just underneath the mesh, or in the place accessed from the the cabin.

Does this affect the airflow into the a/c?

David

The foam is right under the mesh. Its reticulated foam used for air filters so doesn’t effect flow at all. Stops almost all crud.

BlueAgave,

I dont know what reticulated foam is. Can you provide a picture of the texture of the foam and give me some idea of what kind of shops stock it, please?

From the picture of the mesh, it looks like what Amazon.com calls aquarium foam. Is that so?

Did you check that there is no crud on the filter down below?

David

A quick internet search will enlighten you.

Malc, My quick search got me closer to enlightenment. But I imagine that if I went into a shop and asked for reticulated foam, they would look at me rather oddly. As the foam required, with the appropriate amount of reticulation, must be sold for a different purpose, the question becomes: what does one buy that can be put to use as a filter under the gauze? For what purpose is it usually used?

David

Sorry you lost me there-----
