Calling all Mk3/Mk3.5 1.8i owners - fuel consumption

At the risk of starting what may be considered a bit of a dull subject for some MX5 owners…

I’ve had mine for 1 month now, and for the first time, filled the petrol tank up and did a brim to brim calculation. I was amazed to find that it had returned 39.5 MPG over 351 miles!

Now, I’m not lead footed, but I do like to explore the upper reaches of the rev range in the lower gears sometimes{#emotions_dlg.smile}.

This tankful consisted of mainly A and B road driving, very few short journeys, a bit of motorway (but keeping to 65/70) and a bit of urban work.

What do other owners of the 1.8 get??

Also, from reading ā€œEmptyā€ on the gauge, with the low fuel warning light on, I only managed to squeeze in 40.4 litres. Theoretically, there was almost 10 litres left in the tank, does this sound familiar/correct to you guys?

I’ve had my car from new and that all fits in with my experience over the last three and a half years.

Never trust the fuel warning light though.

Not really tried to see what mpg i am getting

but did do 34 miles on the fuel warning light
not sure how far i’d wanna test that
and did it with pretty consistant careful driving (for me anywayCool )

Ā Er… 22mpg!

IfĀ I behave then about 34mpg.

Had mine ( a 2.0LĀ  sport ) for 4 years now.Ā

Average consumption around the 34 mpg mark, with better on long runs. (did over 3000 miles going to Italy and managed almost 37 per gal with much high speed motorway travel).

I once ran to empty with a spare can in the boot and did 62 miles gentle driving from the low fuel light. Am told it is not good for the CAT but have done over 30K since.

Mid Wales to Glasgow Ā mainly motorway - 42 mpg, full trip around highlands 2,500 miles and total avg was 39 mpg.

Ā The fuel light comes on with approx 30 miles to go before the main tank is empty, the is a reserve tank that will allow a few more miles, HOWEVER this can bring the silt from the bottom of the tank into the fuel system and can compromise the running.Ā  Best to fill up when you get to 1/4 tank !

Just brimmed my tank, and got 36mpg. Mix of 5 mile journeys to work and 20-50 mile pleasure/shopping trips. Not too shabby. On similar trips, my 1.3TD Fiat just scrapes 50mpg.

Hi… I took delivery of my 2.0 litre Coupe in Sept 06 and since then I have always acheived 39 - 42 mpgĀ  Like yourselfĀ  if I top it right up to the brim it takes just on 40litres. = 8 gallon, and dependent where I buy petrol from ( the quality varies )Ā  I can achieve 320 miles until the warning light comes on!Ā  I rarely do more than 15 miles with the light on before refilling. Be wary of running the tank dry as I have preiously mentioned some ā€˜supermarket’  petrol is rubbish and shows on performance. and is probably full of crap too!

I’m achieving similar in my car. Just had a trip down to Cheltenham from Lincolnshire and got 46mpg over 380 miles which was my best yet. That’s doing a steady 60mph on the motorway (I find the wind noise over the hood does my head in at 70mph on a long journey!) I also find that the more fuel I can save on the boring m-way, the more beans I can give it on the back roads

I was thinking this was a fantastic figure, especially for a 2.0, but if you’ve been working on 40 litre = 8 gallons, that could explain it!

40 litres/4.546 = 8.799 gallons. You may be getting nearer 36/37, which is still good.

Hi Danny.  It may be time for a right foot transplant Smile

I like to call it enthusiastic progress!!  Rolling eyes

I used to get about 34 mpg on my 2 year old MC 2 litre Sport PRHT.

Immediately after the 2 year service I changed my worn Bridgestone RE050 tyres for Toyos (T1-R).

Now I only get 30 mpg to 31 mpg (based on the dash readout, and over the same daily run). Any ideas why it is so low?

It doesnt seen to be the handbrake rubbing. The dealership have had a look and cannot see anything obviously wrong.

Ā I’ve had my 2.0l Kendo Roadster Convertible since August and have done over 2,000 miles. Brim to brim fillings have averaged just over 40 mpg (using 4.55 litres to the gallon) and I estimate that I have 7 to 8 litres remaining when the low fuel light comes on.

I did a measured tank and got 37 mpg earlier in the year.

Today I did 50 miles with the fuel warning light on and managed to squeeze 45 litres in the tank.

I find the non linear fuel gauge very annoying. I can go further with the fuel light on than I can from a quarter tank to when the fuel light comes on.

I am averaging 37.4 Ā short run down m55 m6Ā A B roads back home 1.8 miyako

I had exactly the same experience. I’ve owned a 2006 2.0l sport since March 2011. It had RE040s ont he back and mismatched tyres on the front (cant remember the brands). I was getting 34MPG every single tank. In August, I bought a new set of Toyo T1-Rs. Ever since, my economy has dropped slightly to 31MPG for every tank.

I imagine that it may be that the Toyos are a softer compound so there is more friction at the wheels. They are also known for having soft sidewalls so maybe a higher pressure would help. I wouldn’t worry about there being a problem with your car though

Ā I have only had my ā€œ5ā€ a couple of weeks, and seeing that I have been driving around like a Tw*t was pleased to have got 34 mpg from the first tank…but wished it was closer to 40 !..However, showing off does use up the fuel…I having been driving diesels for the last 13 years and used to brilliant fuel returns on a Corsa SXI 1.3 turbo diselĀ (52-65 mpg) and my V70 Volvo (2.5 turbo diesel) that can squeeze a massive 45-50 mpg when driven with a light foot to the speed limits…but the fun of driving my new toy is giving me the best grin ever…I drove from Southampton up to Cirencester last sunday via Salisbury/Marlborough/Swindon (going on the motorway/d/c’s would be a sin), and kept to the limits baring the overtakes, and did 170 miles and still got over half a tank left, me’s a happy !

was ignored by one MK3 and had a wave back from another MK3, and a wave from a MK1 but none of them had their tops off…shame on them

One question for you guys is…do you get better mpg with the roof up?

mine has been down, and staying down unless it’s raining ! My son thought it was great driving home on sunday with the roof down !..so did i. am I childish or do all new owners get the urge to drive with their tops off? it was only frosty in the am, and about 8 deg C pm !

Ā

whoops mines a 2.0 litre so shouldn’t have posted…sorry
