I’m sure this has been done to death but I thought I’d share a bit of a revelation, which might help other 6foot plus MK1 owners. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = “urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office” />After 2 years of rather awkward ownership due to long legs and my height (6foot 2), I decided to replace the standard steering wheel with a MOMO Nero wheel in a attempt to get a bit more comfort and control. Although slightly smaller in diameter, I was initially disappointed with the conversion as the wheel was much closer to the dash and therfore meaning I had to stretch and I also lost the top of the dials from my field of view. After a bit of searching I found a 50mm SPARCO spacer that I installed between the wheel and the boss yesterday - WOW!!! it feels like I have a different car now. Not ony can I now get in and out easily due to the increased legroom, the wheel is now nice and close to me (as I need to have the seat all the way back) which makes the car much more fun and go-kart like. As the wheel is moved away from the dash at the same rake angle the top of the dials have now also come into view - nice!!! Only downsides are the indicator and light stalks are now a bit of a reach - no big deal really.
My conclusions, a new steering wheel (350mm diameter or less) and a decent spacer (50mm) is a real must for anyone over 6foot - transforms the driving experience above ANY other modification I have done to the car.
Hi,
I am 6’ 2" in old money. I have a V-Spec with a Nardi Wheel, don’t know if this make a diffrence? I find the driving position very comfy.
Prefer getting in/out with the hood down though, I have to get into a position similar to gollum in LOTR to get out with the hood up!!!
Also 6ft 2 - have the same sutuation as you baftacat
I think the Nardi wheel has a spacer, I’m 6’3 and have one too - no problems with the driving position, it’s better than most cars I’ve owned.
