Cam belt kits

Just wondering what peoples thoughts are… original parts or aftermarket?

Thanks in advance

If it worries you, buy the Mazda branded kit, they do not make the cam belt or the tensioners, they buy it in, nothing wrong with a more expensive but warm feeling.

If it does not worry you, buy after market.

Make your own choice, it’s your car and your money.

I bought some recently from David Manners Group but no threads in pump for adjustable tensioner. Very poor as i had the get helicoil kit and thread the hole with m10 tap etc. Very messy and time consuming for me. Bought 3 kits.

I have recently bought 2 kits from MX5 parts, one genuine and one aftermarket. In all honesty the aftermarket one was fine as it had a genuine cam cover gasket and tensioner spring, and IL Motorsport pulleys.

I got my kit from Autolink  did it 2012 no probs with to date.

Hi,

my mk2.5 1.6 is due a cam belt / water pump change, does anyone know if this service also includes valve clearance checks or do all mx5 engines have automatic valve clearance.

Just not sure if it’s something I should mention to my local garage or just leave at as it doesn’t need attention.

Your car has shimmed valve clearances. Introduced on the introduction of the NB.

Thanks Robbie,

Are these known to wear or should I not worry about it.

No they don’t wear normally unless run without oil etc.No need to do anything with them unless noisy etc. Gates Powergrip are top quality products in timing belt kits etc and are suppliers to several manufacturers from new. Available through most motor suppliers. factors locally

No harm in pushing a feeler blade through them while you’ve got the cam cover off but as Robert said, chances are they’ll be fine.

Ditto for Gates belts. Used them in loads of cars over the years. Shop around and you can pick them for sensible money.
