Cambelt Change, best place in the southwest

  1. My model of MX-5 is: Early MK2 1.8s (1998 on an S plate)
  2. I’m based near: Bath
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: Cambelt change

My MK2 only has 20k on the clock, body work is in great condition, so I want to keep the engine the same.
Is my engine non-interference or interference as far as cambelt is concerned ?

Even if it is non-interference, after 25 years would it be sensible to get it changed (even though it has on done 20k) ?
Closest MX5 specialist to me I can find is Southhampton, does anyone know of someone closer to the Bath area to carry out this and other work ?

Thanks
Simon

It is not a complex job, I wouldn’t get too stressed over which competent garage does it.

Do you not want to have a go at it yourself with guidance ?.

Any half decent garage can do it. Have the water pump replaced at the same time.

Non interference, but most certainly over due in terms of age not miles and as said get an OEM water pump in there as well. Usual bill is about £250-ish plus or minus in Scotland for the work…but you can get proper Mx5 belt, pump, and rocker cover gasket yourself.
I’d maybe do to coolant as well TBH. But if it’s a nice colour…leave it.
GREAT CARE must be applied to avoid even one belt tooth out of kilter but a decent garage ought to know this.

Thanks all, good to confirm it’s Non interference and good to know to ask for the water pump to be done at the same time. Much appreciated.
