MK4 1.5 and 2.0 engines are cam chains - not belts
Jan '15 would make it an NC, no?
But the MZR units in the NC are chain as well of course 
True - In my mind 2015 was always a mk4.
Not sure exactly when in 2015 the MK4 was launched in the uk.
I’ve personally seen NCs registered as late as the of end April '15. And the first NDs I’ve seen registered were July '15.

Just found on the log book it’s D.2. Type is NC1 - Does this make it a chain, and do you know whether this needs replacing or would it depend on how the car has been managed previously. Sorry for all the questions and thanks for replying
Chain, and not a normal service item, so nothing to worry about it in this department.
