Cambelt replacement

Hi All.

my mk2.5 last had a cambelt replacement at 33k and is now at 68k. Should I replace the cambelt soon? What is the manufacturers recommendation? I have heard something about non interference between the valves and the head but would like to know more if anyone has any knowledge of this. There is a light screeching noise on start up in colder weather (it’s not any belt slipping) which I feel may be the water pump but it disappears after a few revs of the engine. If it’s time to replace the cambelt then I will get the pump replaced as well at the same time. Would be good to have your thoughts please.

The cambelt should be changed every 54,000 miles, However, unless the 33k change was done by a Mazda dealer you may want to change it sooner as non-genuine parts may have been used. The engine is indeed non-interference, so no risk of bent valves etc. if a belt snaps.

The screeching is most likely a drive belt, so check again. Is there enough antifreeze in the coolant?

Hopefully the waterpump was also changed at 33K - any idea why it was done then? - perhaps age related change rather than mileage.

Given the recommended service interval and the fact that is is a non interference engine, I would leave until 87K.

This is not the easiest of jobs to do yourself and quite costly if you decide to pay a garage. Whilst there are no problems and no evidence of anything wrong I would leave well alone until the replacement is due.

MX5 cambelts and waterpumps, aftermarket as well as OE do not give many problems from my experience,

Can anyone confirm that the MK3 2.0 litre has a chain and not a belt? I read on another forum that it is a chain and does not require changing unless the tensioner has reached its’ limit.

The MK3 cars 1.8 and 2.0 have a timing chain fitted. Should last the life of the engine unless abused.
