Can I hire an inspection pit ,and get some help ?

Having just purchased an Mx5 I now wish to get ahead of the winter,by getting underneath my car and having a go at weatherproofing it.I know garages charge a fair ammount of money to do this work, but even though Im a complete novice Id like to do the work myself.I had hoped to find an inspection Pit to make my job easier.

I would really like  to find someone with a pit who has carried this job out on their own car.I would happily pay a hire cost in order to use the pit and get some advice about how to tackle it.

Im a complete novice when it comes to car matters, but It would be good  to get to grips with improving and protecting my car against the great British weather.Sun,rain ,rain ,rain ,rain, snow snow, sun ,rain rain.

Im Uxbridge based just outside Heathrow

There’s this in North London:

Doesn’t say anything about not leaving Waxoyl dumped all over the floor.

Considered this myself for a nano second then decided to drive 90 miles to Autolink. £115 +Vat for a full service & Waxoyl Thumbs up

Plus they lend you a car so you can drive into town while they do it.

Sounds good thanks for that.Is there anywhere where I can find how to do the work ? I mean Ive heard you need to apply rust inhibitors and then the wax.Be good to see some instructional info.I was told certain things under the car shouldnt be painted. And do things need rubbing down to remove any rust already there? Im looking forward to doing it myself, but properly

I’m with Dave on this, waxoiling is a filthy job, I would rather pay someone to do it for me. Autolink will do a great job for you.

Btw

Just a couple of pointers:-

It’s a good idea to put your rough location in your profile [this helps with us offering advice etc].

Also please put your car details in your sig, again helps when advice is being sought.

On the other hand, I’d be happier doing the preparative work myself: where the underseal has become damaged, fixing, and painting attendant rust. The so-called Chassis rails can take a bit of a hammering, and so rust can set in, and also the factory underseal on the flat footwell sections can loosen, and form a moiture trap. Not sure some one armed with a compressor and and barrel of tar would take the same sort of care. You don’t get to inspect the undeside of the care, and this is a good opportunity. Most people would agree its better to wash the car yourself, not pay a man, because not only will the final outcome be better, but cleaning a car yourself tends to highlight problems and faults you might not have noticed before. Same applies to undersealing.

I’ve undersealed cars before with nothing more than a set of axle stands. Mucky, uncomfortable job, but at least the Waxoyl gives you a buzz.

In general, brake pipes, handbrake cables, plastic, rubber parts shouldn’t get coated.

As you said, your location is Uxbridge.

Well I had a closer inspection of the internet that a mechanic checking nuts and Ive turned up a handfull of companies charging around £250-450 for the same job.Although some places say it can be done in 8 hours with cleaning and treatment inc wax injection, while one company who seems incredibly thorough ask for at least two days to allow for car drying process.

Having seen the detail in which they appear to go to to protect a car for the money,I have to conclude that It might be worth saving up to get a pro to do it.Of course that not set in stone, but I am being swayed to Pro.I found a company in Doncaster who looked good. However the cheshire company who take up to three days look like excellent as well. Not sure If I could really afford the travel to and from cheshire on top of a fairly pricey process. So I think I might go for the Doncaster company.

Of course ive seen mobile units, but I havent got the space for them to work outside my house, and im not convinced that this process can be carried out well by mobile units.Better to be in a decent garage.

Ignore the bad grammer on previous posting,I havent had my tea and toast yet.

 Who’s the Doncaster firm Dave?

 How about Rustmaster in Luton
