I have a newly arrived base spec (SE) softtop.
When i lower the hood (even with the engine off) the window s drop half way automatically.
however, when i raise the hood, the windows remain half way down, and as far as i can tell the only way to raise them is to turn the engine on.
I was hoping for a long press on the remote key fob…
and failing that
at least being able to raise the windows using the interior buttons (with Accessory power switched on)
But no…
you have to turn on the Engine.
I have read the handbook…
I can live with it. And i know i bought the base spec… but if there’s an simple thing i’m missing, i’d like to know.
Thanks.
Also first post! (& enjoying the sunshine!)
On the ND, pressing the start button twice without having a foot on the clutch will turn ignition on without starting the engine. You can then operate the windows. Press the start button a third time to turn it all off.

That is definitely not in the handbook… but it works on my car.
thanks. That’s been bugging me for 2 days!
Also when you turn off the car you can use the internal buttons to raise the windows for the next 30 seconds providing you don’t open a door.
So -
Drive along with the roof down, pull up and turn off the engine.
Raise the hood from inside the car and the windows drop.
Press the up buttons to raise the windows.
Open the door, exit the car and lock it.

Another really helpful reply. Thank you.
Question: is there a handbook somewhere for all the stuff that isn’t in the handbook?

I believe that’s it’s a safety/weight issue.
In order to allow closure from the key fob (or even one-touch closing from the switch) you have to have a mechanism in place to determine if anything (child, animal, whatever) gets trapped by the closing window, and to then stop or reverse that closing.
Given that Mazda has done everything possible to keep the MX-5’s weight down, I imagine that they decided to go for weight saving over convenience in this case. Correctly, in my opinion.
Or your passenger. Your instructions missed the bit where you have to quickly instruct inexperienced MX-5 passengers not to open their door prior to engaging the hood and raising the windows
Yup. Six years into ownership and I still say to my wife “Don’t open th…”.
Sure you can guess why I stop there…
