Can someone please explain about the 1.8 vvt 6 speed.

 hi, I’m currently looking for a mk2.5 mx5, ive seen a few with 6 speed vvt engines, are these as good as the earlyer models, it seems like they are not all 6 speed. and not all vvt. im struggling to see what year they changed over. im looking at mainly 02-04 plates.

  a bit of advise would be appreciated, are there any specific problems to look out for on these models.

 thanks.

All 1.8 NB with VIN serial number (last 6 digits of VIN) 200001 onwards are VVT engines. The VVT gives no real problems. They give the odd fault with an over retard concern which puts the MIL on but an oil change can cure this… if it doesn’t you may need a new VVT OCV which are not cheap. But if the car has no history of this then don’t be put off by it.

And in English Rob?[*-)]

Think i’m right in saying that if it’s a MK2.5 (built from Spring 2001 on) and it has a 1.8i engine it will have VVT. And if it’s a MK2.5 1.8i Sport then it will have the six speed gearbox - the standard 1.8i and 1.6i MK2.5s had the five-speed fitted.

The 1.6i cars didn’t feature VVT.

The most common technical issue with the MK2.5 (from new) was a widely reported problem with clutch judder.

The other often reported fault is alloy wheel corrosion - particularly MK2.5 Sport wheels.

There should be loads of info on these subjects on this forum if you do a search (or someone far more able than me can put some links on this thread)

 This thread will help you decide if you need a Sport with the 6 speed gear box;

Yeah… I had consumed much beer when I posted that! Doesn’t read very well does it?
