Can you dye a dark blue mohair roof black?

I have a Mk2 Mx5 that came with a Black Vinyl roof that was knackered, leaking and you could barely see through the rear plastic window.

I jumped at second hand Mohair in dark blue that came with a glass heated window for a price that I couldn’t say no to.

Because my car is in British racing green, the dark blue roof and green paint is a slightly odd combination. It’s not horrible, just would look better if it was black.

I know you can re-dye soft tops to get them back to the original colour, so is it possible to use something like Black Renovo to both restore and darken the colour to something closer to black? From what I’ve read it’s do-able if you are going to a darker colour.

It needs a good clean anyway, so after a good scrub with milton fluid and soap, seems like it might be a worth while dying it assuming it gets good results.

Has anyone done this before?

personally anything to do with leather or the roof I’d ask leather repair people. The one I used fixed my seats and now look brand new - they are the people who would know if the material can be painted, how and what product to use.

In the long term probably not. The actual material is a spin dyed acrylic material where the colour is actually in the thread. There are various recolouring kits for fabric hoods but these are essentially a paint formulated for plastics. These may last some time depending on the exposure to uv and the elements but would probably need to be re coated every 2 to 3 years max. The fact that your hood is blue and you want to move to black makes it less noticeable but the long term answer is a black hood.

My initial reaction when I saw the picture of the car was “that looks quite nice”
If you don’t like it then there’s nothing to lose by trying to dye it. I helped a friend dye his XJS mohair cabriolet top from a very light blue to very dark blue and it’s still just as dark as we did it 3yrs ago.
I’ve also re-dyed leather seats from black to mid grey and that lasted well.
As long as you use the right products for the job and follow the prep properly you should be fine :+1:

…but I quite like it as it stands

You mean it isn’t the hair of real moes? I’m shocked!

Thanks! To be honest I only fitted it on friday evening, and the colour has grown on me, it does look okay. That said a clean, re-dye and re-waterproofing would do it wonders. Glad to know that the black dye does work well though. Even if it fades from black to a very dark blue over the next few years, it’d still look good.

Did you use the Renovo dye, or another brand? They sell a complete restoration kit which seems to be decent.

I think it was Renovo from memory

Another option is to see if anybody with a black roof wants to swap for a dark blue one. An owner of a blue Mk2 might be interested. You never know.

I think it looks OK too.

If I’d had to guess, I’d have said the original hood colour would have been light tan, like the interior. I know such Mk2 cars were produced, a colleague of mine bought one new in I think 1998.

Renovo do the restoration kits in blue and black, so if you think it needs perking up you have a choice. I won’t opine on how well it will work because I haven’t used it myself.
