Not the most exciting of subjects to discuss on a motoring forum but…
Just had the ND RF for less than 2 days and the missus wanted to do a top-up grocery shop (the main weekly is delivered).
So, I suggested we take the MX-5 (any excuse) - after all, we were only picking up a few things…
However, once we started wandering around the store - I started to get a bit nervous. As we don’t pop in-store that often, the missus kept spotting stuff to buy - including a 10kg bag of rice that was on offer…I talked her out of the rice bag - but she still managed to fill 6 shopping bags up.
I was picturing bags in the footwells and laps as we approached the car…
But was pleasantly surprised when it all fit!! Probably could have squeezed the rice bag at the bottom too
It’s the big packs of bog rolls and cases of cider that messes the packing in somewhat.
Yes it’s surprising how much fits in. Was tempted yesterday to go to Sainsbury’s in the NC, needed petrol in it but remembered I also needed 3 bags of sand from B&Q next door. That was a mistake too, daily driver has a huge load space and looking at the plants. The sand, the Sainsbury’s shop and a whole load of plants (20% off until Monday) were accommodated.
Your mention of B&Q reminded me of collecting some very long pieces of trunking, etc from Screwfix in my Honda S2000 with the roof up - several years back. A couple of the staff came out to take pics!! (it was quiet time and they were probably bored)
I always go on holiday in the MX and it actually saves me quite a lot of cash, due to the fact that when I’m asked if we should buy something that we really don’t need, I reply, “If it’ll go it the car with all the luggage on the way home, then go ahead…!”
I do a monthly shop for big things like that and go on my own. It’s amazing how many bog rolls and kitchen rolls you can get in the passenger area of an RF. I have yet to have a situation where I cant get everything in.

My good wife convinced me we should buy a couple of trays for the greenhouse. They are long trays you stand grow bags on. Won’t go in the boot I said, but she still had to have them. Sure enough about 3" too long so inside the car it was. Down behind the seats after a little fiddling they dropped down behind her passenger seat. Next problem the roof wouldn’t go up, it fouled the trays🥴 couldn’t drive top down it was absolutely tipping it down with rain.
Got there in the end, she had to sit cramped up in her seat, I moved it further forward
Well that’s what I have been thinking about our long weekend’s away.
Missus loves popping into charity shops and antique stores.
The MX5 should help keep stuff to a minimum now.
We are off touring France for a couple of weeks in the summer, so i bought a boot rack. The plan is to go with the boot rack empty, then transfer the luggage to the rack as we fill the boot with wine. So the question is, how many cases of wine fit in the boot.
I did a weeks road trip with my partner, who is not known for packing light, to Ireland. Got everything in no problem including walking gear, wetsuits, posh gear for dinner etc. Getting the duty free in on the way home was a bit of a squeeze but we managed😊
