Sorry a bit new to this game. Finally I have sorted my settings to post a message properly. I have recently purchased a 54 plate 5 and noticed it seems to be a bit light on security. Does anyone know of a good car alarm, not too expensive, that the insurance companies will recognise and give a discount on?. Ideally I could do with linking it to the central locking so I have remote central locking. I am a bit lazy in that respect. I dont need some all singing and dancing model just something to stop thieving scum nicking the stereo which is a standard fit one and the car. I live in the Preston area (NW UK) and dont mind travelling a reasonable distance for a quality dealer. Thanks
Errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, give us a clue Kevin.
Sorted the post now any info would be welcome - thanks ?
Mine has what seems to be quite common, an immobaliser but no alarm. I have a bit of a downer on alarms just coming from bikes where IMO they are a waste of space and cause a lot of trouble.
I have left well alone and changed the standard sound system for a face off item and also taken out the in cabin remote boot lock so I have to use the key every but at least it’s safer to my mind.
Most good alarm systems will have “Thatcham approved” on them and so insurance companys will recognise them.
My MK 2 has a Cobra alarm fitted. Seems good to me and have had no problems. Can get replacement key fobs from ICE House in Stoke on the Trent.
Insurance Co’s are more interested that she will have an immobaliser fitted than a alarm,so any discount you have will be it,the alarm is more a personal thing, the more thats on the car, push’s Mr light fingers somewhere else,i have persaonally always fitted the microscan alarms with the microwave sensor,so it can be alarmed even with the roof down, and fitted the remote C/L as a stand alone unit,so if one fails there is no need to replace everything.
The remote C/L kits can be found on flea-bay for around £30 delivered, alarm direct from microscans site £80’ish.
Hope that helps
No need to remove the remote boot release see here - http://www.mx5oc.co.uk/forum/forums/p/22311/141149.aspx#141149
My car, a base model with no C/L, had an aftermarket TOAD alarm fitted when new. It’s Thatcham approved and I have the installation certificate but I got no discount on the insurance.
A 54 plate will have an immobiliser as standard with a trasnponder in the key, make sure you tell your insurance company, it made a bit of a difference on my premium even though they should have known.
