The badge on the front of my Berkeley is the Mazda emblem as opposed to the Mazda logo, both of which are different to the Eunos logo.
The Eunos signifies imports, is that right? By import, what exactly does that mean???
The logo is just the standard logo on all Mazda models I’m guessing, but why do the Berkeleys have the emblem instead? Is that just cos they’re limited edition??
I’ve had my car for a few weeks now - the novelty still hasn’t worn off
From 1994, UK MX5s had a nose badge (the toilet seat design) as opposed to a “Mazda” decal.
In Japan, Mazda cars were sold through 4 different sales channels (like Lexus x4); Mazda, Autozam, Eunos, Enfini. Eunos was supposed to be the “luxury” brand, after Mazda’s plans for an Amati brand fell through. The MX5 was sold as the Eunos Roadster in Japan, alongside a range of other distinctly non-sporty cars. Bizarrely, the Eunos dealers used to also sell Citroen BXs and AXs, hence the Eunos owners manual carried a Eunos logo alongside Citroen.
Originally, Mazda wanted to sell a sports version of the MX5 through the Enfini channel, to be be badged as the Enfini MS-5. Internal squabbles meant that the Eunos business refused to sell a Eunos RX7 (presumabley because they thought it would rob Cosmo sales), so it never happened.
Imports also include the US spec Mazda Miatas that mostly arrived in 1989-91 (especially before the MX5 was officially launched here; Motor and Autocar used to carry loads of small ads for importers of Miatas), plus the handful of Australian MX5s, and then the rather more significant Cypriot and Irish spec cars sold by some car supermarkets at one point (and a Mazda dealer, allegedly…).
