Car Body Scatches

Hi, Can anybody recommend a filer for paint scratches which can be coloured to match the car’s paint

The main scratch is a little too deep for these "magic Pens " pens to work

They dont work. If its deep it will be respray of the panel thats needed

It is very possible to paint in scratches then wet sand and polish. You have little to loose as repaint is the next viable option.

You need a decent qualified retailer really as Mazda paint is very soft and extremely thin. The use of a multi layer PTG is highly recommended. ???

I scraped the full length of my Impreza against a bag of building material and it went through the colour layer. The cars is worth say £2k on a good day and a local body shop quoted me £1,000 to repaint the side of the car. The paint thickness guage above is over £2,000 and is not accurate at paint layer level.

I think the Impreza will get a bottle of touch up paint and hope for the best. The good thing about living in the country is the usual layer of dirt that covers up paint blemishes.

My PTG is stunningly accurate. A DeFelsko Positector… Yes it was expensive but I’ve worked on cars that have been terrifyingly expensive and frankly I would not have touched without the right kit.

Your car like the one that is above sounds like it’s s hit or bust. Nothing to loose but the right kit could be the difference between getting it right or not ??

My understanding is that touch up paint is softer than factory paint. You build up the paint in the scratch so its proud, then use a liquid cutting compound, polishing using an old credit card wrapped in cloth. You bring the touch up paint down to level with the factory paint, and its hardly noticeable.

Well that’s the theory. Usually what happens in the touch up paint falls out. I think years ago there was a group buy on the forum with some stuff. It didn’t work for me, but maybe I’m too impatient.

You should be able to get acceptable results with a straight colour but metallic would require lots of skill.

I patientally filled a deep gouge on my bonnet with a touch up kit paint but used a fine art brush instead of the silly brush supplied. Once happy I used the lacquer on it the took some very fine grade wet n dry to it. Buffed up and waxed I have trouble to identify where the gouge was.

Also the lacquer seems to lift easily on the Mk3 painted body, I’ve had to touch-in here and there using a similar method to the above, gently does it with the wet n dry paper.
