Car parking ramps

Hello,

I have an MX-5 RF, with Mazda sports exhaust.

Could anyone please advise if I can get into the following car parks, without catching the underneath of my car:

  • Bluewater top floor parking area, opposite M&S,
  • Gunwharf Quays underground car park.

Thank you!

Where is your sense of adventure?

Sarcasm Sunday, (Sorry).
Does anyone know whether a 747 Jumbo Jet can land on my front drive in Wiltshire?:slightly_smiling_face:

Yes, but you might not be able to use it or the house again…

Not quite the responses I was hoping for, but very funny!

I used to have a VW Touareg, so parking ramps were not an issue. A bit more of a concern for the MX-5 though …

Unless you’ve had it slammed you’ll be fine. It’s a low slung car but actually underneath it’s not any lower than a normal hatchback

Thanks.

I also have a Fiesta ST Line X, at the moment. It is lower than a standard Fiesta and only just clears the ramp at Bluewater. Hence my concern about the MX-5 (which - I think - is even lower).

If you have a point of reference couldn’t you measure them both and compare?

It is also down to the relative position of the front wheels and front of the car (similarly for the rear wheels/rear of the car) so I don’t think that ground clearance is the sole criteria to consider.

I think “breakover angle” is relevant to going over humps (top of the ramp) and there is another term that covers the approach and exit (bottom of the ramp). Hence, I do not believe that ground clearance is the sole criteria.

Chances are that this information is not published anywhere, so I was hoping that, if possible, someone on this forum might be able to advise me, based on their own experience.

I fell victim to this last night, a car park which was no problem in my NB (standard), proved to be troublesome in my NC (2 up with Sport suspension)… :open_mouth:

Sorry to hear that, Jemster. I hope no lasting damage was done.

These cars do have very little over hang so I would not be too concerned with the tops and bottoms of ramps. My corsa has more issues than my 5. I’d just be sure to go slowly so the suspension is at full height at the critical point

Aren’t approach and departure angles (if that’s what they’re referred to as) stated in the full Owners Manual?

Why would you go shopping in an MX5?

The enormous boot!

They might be although this is perhaps more likely for a SUV. They did quote this for my Touareg but it was a genuine off-roader. Before you ask … I did go “off road” in selected car parks (!) and also used it for camping, along with everything else.

Even if I knew these angles, I wasn’t planning on going to Bluewater or Gunwharf Quays with a protractor, so actual experience of an MX-5 owner would be really helpful.

No issues with my NB at gunwharf (standard, but 2 up with considerable shopping in it), however many issues with the multistory car park at Tesco’s in Cosham under the same conditions.
