Car starts up then dies - Immobiliser or Fuel Pump Relay Issue? Also have a parasitic battery drain

  1. My model of MX-5 is: 1996 MK1 MX-5 1.8iS
  2. I’m based near: Cambridge
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: Immobiliser / Fuel Pump (Relay) / Battery Drain

Hi! I have recently bought a mk1 mx-5, described above, which had been sitting for over four years untouched. Having changed the battery, the car started first time without any issues at all. This was the case for a further 3 or 4 starts but then the security light on the dash came on and the car would then start for a couple of seconds and then cut out - this is still the case.
The security light stays on even with the ignition off, I don’t know if this is supposed to be the case. I went away for two weeks and when I got back the new battery I had fitted was flat. I wouldn’t imagine a warning light would be able to drain a battery that quickly but do wonder if the two issues are connected.

I don’t know if it’s an issue with the immobiliser or potentially a fuel pump relay, which I’ve read about, but I’d really appreciate some help with this issue.

Cheers

*would love to show you the other images but can only post 1 as I’m new to this

You have proved that there is no difficulty in doing that.
Sorry I dont know what your other problems are; but they are undoubtedly due to leaving the car unused for four years, and may be easily fixable when identified.
Good luck in fixing them!
David

First step really is t get the battery charged the carry out a fault code read. A search should find the process for carrying it out.

This could be an alternator problem.

I had a friend who had a similar issue with his NA starting and then stopping after a few seconds. It was a fault with the immobiliser randomly failing. “Thumping” the immobiliser box (up under the drivers footwell) cured it for a few days then the problem reoccurred.

A garage couldn’t fix it or get a replacement, so they ran a wire bypassing the immobiliser. Can’t say how they did it as I never saw the “fix” but was told they ran a new connection between the ignition switch and the starter motor relay. Hopefully this may help you investigate further.

plus 1, bought a 92 clean rust free na 1.6 auto eunos last month and drove it home from Derby on a VERY wet 360 mile trip home via ferry at Cairnryan Scotland… never missed a beat ave speed kept around 60/70/80… it blew a heater hose after a run to see a mate 3 days later, then when i got all the water out of the drivers sill my immobiser started to play around so it had to come out asked friends and ex trade contacts they described why and what to expect if fiited well it will be in deep so get looking behind glove box radio area and under driver side dash, found it screwed to left side bulkhead above the blower, loom all black wires stretched from left to under drivers dash and been spliced into ign loom just a few inches from the plug, good a good lamp lit and had a real good examination and only one wire broken and joined by a fused connection, cut at the splices and also the fused piece jointed the cut wire and safely with shrink on tube, car started immediately…pics available if need be… will

Thanks for all your responses, they all seem really helpful. I’m a bit tied up for time at the moment but will give them a try as soon as I have a spare moment, and hopefully get to the root of the problem.
