I have just bought a Mazda MX-5 1600cc Mk1 J Reg 1991 with A/C , P/S , E/W , E/L , The previous owner drove the car into his garage before going abroad to work three months ago it was running perfectly OK . On coming home he went to start the car but the Battery was dead . He went and bought a brand new Battery but did say when refitting the last terminal there was a flash . Upon turning the ignition on no dash lights plus nothing else works only the retractable headlights . We have turned the engine by hand so thats not seized the Battery Leads are all OK . Any one got any ideas please . Cheers Tony
Car will not start or even turn over, nothing after lay up, new battery but no dash lights showing p
Sounds like the main fuse has blown. It’s the (bolted in) 80A black fuse in the fuse box under the bonnet.
Always connect the earth last! It stops the big sparks.

Before changing the fuse, check that the battery is connected the correct way round!!
Cheers , I have found the Fuse you are talking about it looks OK looking at the metal strip through the clear cover . I have undone the bolt but I still cannot pull fuse out , and I cannot see another bolt . So I put a live feed to the bolt head and the dash lights have come on , the center locking locked , and the Alarm is going off which as much as i try cannot stop working ( i wonder if its because the bonnet is still open ) its only a cheap one so I may be able to pull a plug out . I cannot try to see if it will start until i change the fuse properly as I am just holding a feed to the fuse and need to stop the Alarm deafening every one . Is there another bolt or nut holding the fuse in place please , I know it sounds like i am dumb but i am trying to see and work in the previous owners dark old garage with stuff piled all over and around the car . The brakes are seized on so we cannot push it out , and no room to get the wheels off . I am hoping if the fuse is the culprit I may be able to crack the brakes off by moving the car under its own power , once out and recovered to my home I can start sorting things out and looking to what needs to be done . Does this main Fuse blow regular on the Mazda please or do you think the previous owner made a mistake and shorted it putting the new battery on
I am surprised that the brakes have seized as its only been stood about 4 months , the previous owner just got fed up trying to find out why it would not start , more so when it was OK when driven in the garage , and after buying a new battery £75 , and getting a mechanic who after messing about for an hour told him it needed to be put on diagnostics or a main cable was broken . Went out and bought another car , to be honest for the price i paid him it will break for spares if it needs to much doing to it . See item number on eBay 150365336657. Any other replies or suggestions would be appreciated . Tony
It usually happens when some one stuffs up a battery problem.
My brakes were solid after the car was in a container for 8 weeks with the handbrake on, responded to a bit of welly back and forth. I seem to remember that there are 2 bolts holding the 80 a fuse in place?..can’t remember, long time since I replaced one—
Hi every one it was the main fuse , after changing it dash lights every thing came on . Only problem was getting the alarm immobiliser to work correctly and the previous owner has no book on its operation . Any way after a bit of pushing that button and this button got it so the engine starts and locks by remote . The brakes banged off as soon as the car was moved . Only problem is mainly from cold the car ticks over sweet but if you rev it up the revs drop right down even ignition light glows then recovers to normal tick over , no revving up and down just after you rev the revs drop right down so engine stumbles then recovers , It is Lot’s better when hot . any ideas Tony
Best bet is to start a new post [Y]
