Cat bypass pipe

I have a Eunos, manufactured in 1992 but first registered in the UK in 1991. It has a CAT so presumably it needs to be replaced with another (currently rattles although passed its last MOT) but can a Cat bypass pipe be used in conjunction with a new stainless steel exhaust? What about emissions could it fail, has anybody experienced this?

I am not intending to race the car so it will not be track focussed as I understand some CAT’s are designed for track use only.

How on earth was a car built in 1992, used in the UK in 1991? Time machine?

I assume its a 1991. Imports, pre ~95, don’t need a cat, depending on the mood of the tester (yes, I know you can get them to stick to the letter). It will be tested to a different standard. Unsilenced bits of pig iron cat pipes are about £30. Unsilenced stainless steel scrap are about £50. Silenced cat pipes are getting onto the £60-100 range depending on quality. A decated car, with an aftermarket exchaust, is not aurally pleasurable. Replacement cats, decent enough quality, are £60-80. Better off fitting one of those. If your cat is blocked, of course the car will run better (if sootier) with a cat pipe. But so will fitting a new cat.

Thanks for that.

My CAT rattles and I was looking at a replacement (although the one MX5 Parts sells does not have a good reputation for lasting long). They also sell a stainless steel Cat bypass which is cheaper. There is a used OEM for sale on ebay 370mm, the size I need, but it strikes me as being a risk to spend £100 on that.

oops, I meant to say it was first registered in 2001 in the UK

I was considering that the monika related to the car but clearly it relates to youWink

Check out the MOT regulations your garage adhere to and bear in mind that a rattley cat if that involves the internals needs sorting ASAP.

Cat same price as decat so no excuse - both have same flange connection so should be interchangeable.

Hi

2001 registered car there are no cat or not questions the cat should be refitted for emissions and visual checks as to the presence of a cat

any testing station doing anything else on a uk car is not testing correctly.

It’s a 1992 Eunos so even though registered in 2001 should have a ‘K’ plate or thereabouts.

As a 1992 manufactured car, cat is not required and emissions test should be easy to pass without a cat as long as the engine is running correctly.

Original Eunos cat would have a one time heat fuse fitted(not required). I would take the fuse off and either replace the cat with a UK spec item(345 - 375mm) or fit a decat.

For some reason there was an issue sourcing the decat for these back a while so perhaps a cat is the way to go. I sell these cheaply(cats) so please PM me for a price.
