CD player in the ND

Back in the 1980s I sold (or gave away) my vinyl record collection and embraced the CD revolution. I found CDs much more convenient and more robust. I still have a sizeable CD collection, but only add to my collection very occasionally these days. I know there are alternatives but I still enjoy listening to CDs in my ND2. Some find it tricky to get to the player in the central compartment between the seats, but I don’t have too much of a problem myself. Yes, it’s not ideal but where else could it go? It’s a shame the CD player was removed in later models, as it provided a useful option for those who still like and use CDs. There’s something about something physical that appeals, to me at least. What do others think….

I have a good load of CDs that I never use anymore. I don’t think that I could play them in the house even if I wanted to now. I’m not worried about getting anymore of them, yes physical is nice but in reality they’re all going to end up in landfill one day. Give me Apple Music all day long. I have copied all of my CDs on to iTunes and put them on to an old iPod classic.

Will we be complaining that the industry is not catering for those who are still fond of compact cassette tape? The head unit in my NA, which is from an NB, will play these, CD’s and early iPods (I’ve even got the Minidisc unit to go in it). Is one of those the future?

I have an ND2 without the CD player and don’t miss it one bit, I had an ND1 and never used the CD in that. I have a 2021 Defender and that hasn’t got one either, I just use Apple music from my phone and an Alexa at home.

I have had my ND2 for nearly three years and i have never once used the CD player.

Horses for courses i suppose! :slightly_smiling_face:

I recently bought a ’ new to me’ SEAT ARONA as my main car which has a CD player in the glovebox. It’s an older2018 model and I believe the CD player was deleted in later models. The demand just isn’t there anymore and people are happy with the alternatives. Hey ho….

Never use it personally. Spotify via CarPlay is all i use.

Pop your CD’s onto a USB stick, easy then to select the album of your choice!

I do use a USB stick for some compilations I’ve put together. But I like to use a combination of both if I’m honest!

Playing CDs in my house on a reasonably decent music system :+1: Playing CDs in a car :-1:

I like physical media to handle and display at home but see no advantage in having to move it in and out of the car when I can find all of it on Spotify. Any differences in sound quality are instantly rendered pointless by the background noise in the 5.

One thing to watch out for is that you’re effectively renting your music on Spotify. If something you enjoy is suddenly removed from Spotify then tough. So sometimes I’ll buy obscure or important to me music on vinyl or CD so I effectively have it forever. That’s rare, though.

I have a 2015 ND with CD player. Firstly I never use ‘in car entertainment’.…the car provides the entertainment which is the whole reason for having an MX-5. Secondly the Mazda CD highlights once more the design flaws in the ND cockpit..….if you do choose to use the CD player where are you going to store the CD’s ‘cos there certainly isn’t an obvious place in the cockpit for them, and you have to find somewhere to put the cup holders and their contents before loading the player, and repeat when unloading.

I used mine once but untill you mentioned the CD player I now know where my missing rammstine cd has gone ……. I use Apple car play with my play list 6500 tunes to hear….. its just easier for me but I would like an MD disc player instead of the CD I had both on my RX-8

My Wife loves it in our 30AE, I never use it! If it was a six stacker like we had in older cars I would definitely use it.

At least somebody loves it! :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

oh its so nice to hear of someone else who still plays CDs! Respect for having a CD player in your ND. I even still buy them, call me a dinosaur. I listen to music all the time when I’m working at home or in my car - NB with a CD player of course! Intangible just isn’t the same. One of my first jobs was working in Our Price (if you remember them) and I remember when CDs were the latest thing and we only had a small display of them. oh that makes me feel old.

Hi Rachelpicapica, yes, like you, I still enjoy playing CDs! NDs up to around 2020 - 2021 had a CD player, so mine is one of the last ND models fitted with one. I read somewhere that they were making a bit of a comeback, which is interesting. We’re certainly not dinosaurs buying and listening to them, though they’re not to everyone’s taste, many preferring the convenience of streaming. I too remember when they were the latest thing. I went to see Dire Straits in 1985, when they were promoting CDs with their Brothers in Arms album, it was the start of the CD revolution. Glad you have one in your NB!

I dryly asked the Mazda dealer where the CD player was, for a laugh. He looked at me like I was from Mars and started waffling about Spotify and Apple carplay. Things I will never use. I’ve wondered about the possibilty of plugging a player into that USB-C thingy. MP3’s on a stick for now.

I was recently given one of these DVD/CD players, it’s not brilliant mechanically but with a flip-up lid no worry about the disc being swallowed and it seems to do everything claimed, and it’s almost cheap enough to be disposable.

But where would one put it in an ND?

Velcro to carpet in passenger well? I’d only use it on those occasions I’m graciously given permission to drive it.

Today, as the sun was (nearly) shining I went for a quick spin down to Lulworth Cove. The roads were quiet and dry, so an opportunity to good to miss especially in December. I needed some music, so quickly selected 10 from 6 - Bad Company CD. The album running time is about 47 mins, which worked out perfectly.
