center console cover flap spring gone

Hi,

2002 1.8 Phoenix…center arm rest has 3 “pockets”, the front 2 are round “cup holders” and they have “flap” type lids with small springs to make them close…on the back one the small spring has bust / gone west…any ideas how to fix would be most welcome…

thanks,

Stu

My middle one has done the same thing , (cup holder)

I got some foam and glued it to the back of the lid to stop it flipping back , mx5 parts sell new ones for pennies

Hi again richardn…many thanks for the link…did this job over the weekend and took about 2 hrs…good job as well, as when I finally managed to get it apart the front cup holder flap was also “almost” broken (spring retaining clip hanging on by a thread)…

…a couple of notes to anybody else trying this fix…and there must be a few as this appears to be a design fault so i guess all will fail at some point? …although it has lasted 13 years and 38k miles so can’t complain too much).

trickiest bit (the only one really) was releasing the electric window switch…at one time I almost gave up, but finally managed it by leavering at the back, and then at the sides…did take a bit of effort though…and if it had not been for the clear instructions in the above link I would not have realised that there is one retaining screw underneath this so to get the console out you have to remove the switch to gain access to it…nb you also need to detach the cable from the switch (standard plug and release clip…obvious when you see it…).

…anyhow could not have done it without the instructions so thanks again for that
