Centre console hinge loose

My centre console has the two round compartments (drink holders?), the middle one (behind the ashtray) has lost the sprung closure action on the lid, with the result that it flips opens under acceleration.

I can see a, rather hard to access, piece of metal on the hinge - presumable some sort of spring - which may have snapped.

Is there any way to fix this - short of replacing the entire centre console?

Thanks

The plastic lug  has broken off where the spring sits, you need a good s/hand one, from a breakers like autolink

You mean just the plastic lug - not the entire console?

Can it be ordered as a Mazda part (the lug that is)?

No you will not need to get the whole centre, just the cup holder unit, it all unscrews apart from the centre, the lug will be gone /broken.

Sorry to be dim, do I have to remove the console unit first, to unscrew the centre section?

Yes ,once out, it all unscrews into different sections, you’ll understand once it’s out and turned overThumbs up

So according to the PDF file this is how to remove the centre console

CONSOLE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove in the order indicated in the table.

– 1 Power window switch

– 2 Shift lever knob (MT)

– 3 Console

  1. Install in the reverse order of removal.

But - do I need to remove any part of the automatic shift lever for my AT?

I presume the console is only held by the two screws near the dashboard end?

Does the window switch simply pop out?

You do not need to disconnect the Batt for this, there are 5 phillips head screws that hold it down, 2 at the front one under the electric widow switch on the Mk 2.5(under the ashtray on a Mk 2) and 2 at the rear in the armrest cubby hole.

As for the Auto gearshift, there should be a little black slider button at the front, push it back and you should be able the select N without needed to switch the ignition on to do this job, give me a shout if you get stuck.

I don’t want to damage the electric window switch and it’s pretty tightly fitted  - how is it best removed?

Bump… I can’t get this out without risking damage to the plastic-  any tips?

I used a very thin flexible filling knife 2" 50mm wide. It does need to very thin.   Slide it down the rear side and gently lever.  hopefully you won’t break the plastic latches that hold the switch block in, I broke one.  A slighly narrower blade might be better say 40mm.  Best of luck

Or try an old credit card or store card.

Had same problem on my 2002 MX5 :-(, If you are lucky like I was its just the end of said lug thats snapped off (lug is only there as something for spring to pivot on & there is a small piece on the end that stops the spring flicking off which had broke on my car). Anyway I fixed it by slotting the spring back on then used an appropriate sized self tapping screw (too big & you will break whats left of lug) with a penny washer to keep spring on. & yes the electric window switches were tight! I used some thin plastic trim removal tools but 2 small screw drivers will do it but you will have to be very careful with them so as not to damage anything.

Hope this helps
