Thinking about paint correction and ceramic coating for myMk1 what maintaince is required ,wax or just wash ?sensible answers please
For washing use the two bucket method, PH Neutral soap, wash mitt, and a decent drying towel.
I dropped off my mate to pick his mini up which had been ceramic coated and to be honest I was rather disappointed with the result. And it cost £700! I was considering it for my car but I have concluded that just some elbow grease putting your own paint sealant on and then regular polishing having already clayed the original coat down is just as good and far cheaper. The ceramic coating itself only lasts for two years. That’s what the bloke told me who applied it. You may as well do it yourself with sealant and wax.
Thanks for quick replies, more research needed
Ceramic coatings can be maintained very easily by using a light spray of Ceramic compatible QD’s such as Gyeon Cure and Gtechniq C2v3 after drying, following a wash
This will ensure that the coating will last far longer than their claimed durability
Alternatively a ceramic fortifed shampoo or ‘Wet Coat’ will extend it almost indefinately

My mate who owns an Autobody shop has had his new van plus his motorbike ceramic coated very recently. Personally, I don’t see a difference and he isn’t impressed either and thinks it was a waste of money.
Well, I had my red Golf GTi treated with Gtechnic coating when brand new. Four years later it still looks immaculate and shiny, receiving compliments from all sorts of people, especially in the sunshine. Maintenance is dead easy - wash with a mitt using a grit guard in the bucket and dry with a microfibre towel.
Recommended for the right sort of paintwork colour e.g. dark ones. Not worth doing on my silver MX5 Mk3 where I just give it an occasional rub over with Fusso Coat to keep the raindrops off.

I got a small bottle of 9HMR-Fix from Amazon for about £6. Clearly from China written in bad english applying it was easy enough. Whatever it was it dried into something quite hard. They advise regular washing with neutral ph shampoo with no automatic car washes. Managed to spill a few drops on my jeans which have not washed out and made the fabric less flexible so it must be strong stuff.
Hi guys, I run a detailing company and have done a lot of ceramic packages over the summer (no MX5’s yet! apart from my own!)
The stuff I use costs £50 and will probably cover 2 soft top mx5’s!
Lasts 2-3 years, longer if your’re a summer or weekend user and it sits in the garage…
I charge £300 if no paint correction is needed, £450 upwards if correction is needed. IMO the ridiculous beading effect on my cars is worth applying ceramic, it’s unreal. Protection wise, it ain’t magical stuff, your’e still gonna get a scratch and a dent at the end of the day with our careless drivers on the roads!
If you need to know anymore I’m around
Hi Lewis
What Ceramic Product do you use?
Worth listing your location unless you will travel to anywhere in the UK.
Can you also breakdown what a £300 detail includes.
Thanks
Andrew
I use CarPro CQuartz 2.0 … I understand that there are ceramics out there that ‘claim’ to be better.
However, I find this one is easy to work with, and provides good results. Had it on my winter car for 2 years and still beads like the day I put it on!
Hi Andrew,
Sure. I’m based in Manchester! It’s just me so I don’t travel too far from home!
The £300 is for a brand new car that needs no paint correction. All the basics, full decontamination to ensure car is perfect before applying ceramic.
Then my price obviously goes up if swirls, scratches etc need removing 1 stage polish before ceramic would take it to around £400. 2 stage and ceramic £500.
I’m called AutoGleam Valeting & Detailing… Hope I’m allowed to ‘advertise’ that…
I know i’m replying to something months old but ceramic coats are garbage. I had the Gtechnic whatever it was professionally applied to a brand new car last year, the car had a full correction before hand as well so when done was flawless. After that i get the required ph neutral wash and let it be said i’m not behind the door when it comes to detailing so expected this to be a good alternative to the periodic detail and wax (Swissvax Shield) i normally use.
Let’s just say it now, i’ll never waste my money again. The hydrophobic properties disappeared after about a month or so, compare to that to Shield which is on my MX and still beads now 6 months later. That was annoying but i thought hey ho, at least it’s well protected. It’s not, it picked up more marks and swirls than i’ve ever had but as a kick in the teeth if you do get a swirl then you can’t just polish and get it out as the ceramic coat suddenly becomes hard as nails. I went to France last summer in it and of course you pick up the millions of bugs driving around, those bugs actually left marks in the coating and paint which was then a nightmare to get out.
Basically don’t waste your money and get good PPF instead.
in August I got some 9HMr.Fix from Amazon. it is still beading water after all this time. Only cost £6 and i managed to do two cars with one bottle.
My experience of ceramic coating is excellent.
It was done on my very dark green VR-Limited, by Envy Car Care at Gosport (Portsmouth):
http://www.envycarcare.co.uk/envy-detailing/ceramic-coating/
It was done four years ago, and is as good now as the day it was done - ie absolutely stunning - a very high glass-bottle gloss, and still with amazing beading.
Admittedly the car sees quite light use, but my washing routine is snow foam and pressure washer, followed by two-bucket with a new (every time) microfibre - so careful maintenance has helped preserve the coating I guess.
With that routine you’d be able to preserve any lustre on the paint, no matter what you use.
Try Auto Glanz Hybrid ceramic wax, its £15 for a litre and so far its lasted 3 months on my Seat Leon and is still going strong. I see Meguiars are about to release there version this month in the UK. so much easier to apply than traditional car wax. i only used about a fifth of the bottle to cat my Leon.
my MX5 has just been in for a paint correction and the lad has applied some 12 month wax on it. Once that wears off i will start to use the Hybrid stuff on the MX5 aswell.
My ND has been detailed by myself over 3 days back in November
I will add some pictures
Day 1: Single stage Machine polish with a Flex VRG Machine polisher with a MF Finishing Pad and Meguiars Pro Correction Polish
Wipe down with Paintprep
Wheels degreased, dried and applied with Gyeon Can Coat Ceramic Sealant…protection added after 2 hours with Gyeon Cure
Day 2: Paintwork applied with Kamikaze Miyabi Ceramic Glass Coat Sealant. slow process…flash time of 20 minites per panel before buffing
Car left overnight to fully cure (MUST BE INDOORS)
Day 3: Application of Kamikaze Infinity Hybrid Ceramic Wax. 90 minute cure time before buffing off
The ‘Go Perform’ exhaust was also applied with Miyabi Coat
Finished:
Several washes later using ONLY pure shampoo and pH neutral Snow Foam
Product costs: £250
Time …3 Days at approx £120 a day = £600+ …ish all in if you book in for this at a Detalier
Only £200 as I did all the work
Post Ceramic application maintenance is a basic wash. You can add a Quick Detailer product, but not really necessary
