Certificate of Conformity

Hi from a newbie in Spain.

I need a Certificate of Conformity to re-register my MX-5 NC onto Spanish plates.

Mazda UK want to charge £90 for it,despite most other manufacturers doing it for free.Does anyone know of a way around paying this fee ?

Thanks

Long shot but this chap lives in Spain Nick Caan ( he’s English )and has owned several mx5’s over the years! imported one from Germany so I guess the same issue? Best bet is Faceboo, I’ve always found him helpful and a great guy, although for some reason others have a different take? I’m not really a faceboo guy myself but wonder if you could message him? Tell him Barrie Bettabuilda put you on to him and he may know a work around or be able to signpost you.

Faceboo

Social media for ghosts?

Nick Cann is a good shout-out to help…

No way around it…

I have imported several cars from the UK in to France.

Mazda are not too bad at £85. Ford / Jaguar / Landrover are £140…whereas BMW are free !

At lest Mazda dont make a fuss about it. Landrover need forms filling out, pictures of Vin plate etc. Mazda just post them out upon payment, and are very quick about it too.

Yes, faceboo, bookface,  facetube it’s all the same to me  it was actually a " suggestion " whilst typing the words for the post so just left it as is! I don’t spend much time on there myself other than viewing notifications about being “tagged”  in posts from others, etc?

Hi there!

Did you manage to register you mx5 in Spain?

I’ll probably be in a similar situation in a few months and it would be great if you could share the experience. I’m especially interested in the parts that need replacing, if any (front lights, back fog light, etc…) and much you spend in the whole process.

Thanks!

Hi,I didn’t need certificate of conformity.
Had to replace headlights and rear lights at a cost of approximately £750,for the rear fog and reversing lights,I just crossed the wires in the boot over.
Cost another £550 for the ITV tests, paperwork, number plates, road tax etc.
Hope this helps.
Got the lights from MX-5 Parts in Portsmouth.

Hi! Thanks for sharing your experience.

Did you do it as a change of address or as a direct import? If you move countries within the EU you can take your car with you without paying any extra taxes. £550 for ITV and other paperwork seems a bit much to me, that’s why I’m asking.

Also, what is the difference between “Spanish” and UK rear lights? is it just the rear fog going in the place of the reverse and vice-versa? If that is the case, then you crossed the wires after installing the new rear lights, correct?

I’m guessing that buying those parts from a Spanish dealer might be cheaper than mx-5 parts but you never know, maybe second hand…

Crossed the wires on the new rear lights.Spanish dealer parts are way more expensive than buying in the UK.nOT A sniff of anything 2nd hand at either a scrapper or on ebay Europe wide.
I did it as a change of address, don’t you believe you can get away without paying an extra tax in Spain, they base it on the value of the car.

Hehehe, I know what you mean.

I’s getting closer to the day when I have to make a decision and I’m still not sure: sell here in the UK and buy in Spain or take it with me to Spain?

It’s a 1.8 from 2008 with 77k miles on the clock so the value is not amazing but I should be able to get around 4k gbp for it here (the pound being weaker atm doesn’t help either), then buy in Spain but probably change to something more suitable for a long-ish commute (taking into account that similar mx5s there go for €10k approx and that money can get you a fairly new small diesel hatchback).

I still like the idea of taking this car to Spain with me and making the most of it but I know that once it’s there, its re-sale value will drop like lead so it would be a matter of keeping it until it can’t run no more and eventually trading it in one of those government programmes where they give you an extra discount for your old banger when you buy a new vehicle (at that point I guess it’ll be a hybrid or electric one).

Ohh, doubts doubts… still the mx5 is a great car and it would be greatly missed if I have to part ways with it.

I love my MX5 here in Spain, great roads to drive on,hood down most of the year.
I think you’re wrong about resale value dropping like lead over here.Once you are legal on Spanish plates, the value should be about halfway between UK right hand drive, and Spanish left hand drive cars, that’s what it looks like in this part of Spain.

Interesting point you make there about resale value. I’m guessing you are located in the South of Spain (might be wrong) where ex-pat communities might have some appeal for RHD cars. I would be relocating to the north, where it would be a bit more difficult to sell can always try and get in touch with some Costa del Sol dealers when the time comes.

It might be silly but another thing that puts me off of taking the car to Spain is the air con, or better saying the lack of it, since mine does not have it. I’ve never missed it in the UK (the weather is good = hood down, the weather is bad = hood up) and with the weather being milder in the north of Spain I suppose you can get away with it but even there the temperatures get to the high 30s occasionally and low 30s are common in the summer (that’s when the sun becomes a bit too much and air con is a bless).

Hi We have a 1998 Mazda MX5 MK2 in the Costa Del Sol. I recently put it through the ITV test and it failed only on headlights . Where can I buy some continental headlights i.e. from a LHD Mazda MX5. Do you know any scrap yards in Spain or an online store I can buy them from. I have 2 weeks to do a free re-test ?

Cheers
