sorry this is my first post but I’m trying to sort out a problem with my father in laws MX5. Basically it’s a grey import on a J reg with an expired British MOT but he lives in France and although it will pass a controll Technique (French MOT) he needs a Certificate of Conformit. It’s registered to the previous owner in the UK and he is going to register it in his name at my address when he is next over in August. Can he get this from the dealers or will it have to come from someone who has seen the car?
French wont accept "Imports " as they dont have 17 digit chassis number, ie EU spec .Lad here had exact issue with import I sold him ,his father lives in France and wanted to use/register the car there but no way they would register it.He uses it now on original plates but not acceptable really in long term.

The process is un Reception à Titre Isolée, and it’s used to register anything that’s not a standard EU model. That might mean a US-spec version of a car sold here, or a grey import that was never sold here at all. I’ve done it for my Mazda Miata/MX-5 and have helped a few other people do it. It’s easier now than it used to be, since the re-organisation of the DRIRE – it used to be a lottery whether you got a jobsworth who’d do everything he could to obstruct you. I went through this with the Mazda - several YEARS of banging my head against the brick wall of one complete *****, then went to a different office and it was sorted in three weeks… It can turn into a bit of a nightmare if, for example, all the glass isn’t E-marked, but it IS possible. There are some very detailed forms to fill in though and you need patience and decent French. Kit cars are something else again, and very, very hard to do. Again, it can be possible though, especially if you can find someone who’s already done a similar model. If anyone wants my idiot’s guide to registration, including the RTI, just email me using the link above and I’ll send you a Word doc. Kevin (Coutances 50)
Thanks for the links guys, yes he wants it on French plates if possible otherwise it will be tested on his visits to England. Anyone know of a specialist around Portsmouth?
Whatever happens he will need the UK MOT as the french process will take some time. this then gives him a year to follow the help given in the link given before.
Frog
Thank you again … He is going to trailer it up to Portsmouth and I will give him the details of the company you recommended and then get it registered in the UK.
Autolinkuk (Winchester) would be much better sorting out MOT/registration issues than MX5parts, who are principally a parts reseller with garage side business.
Hi Guys
Many thanks for this advice, my father in law has spoken to the local DREALE office in France and found them very helpful it’s just now Mazda France not willing to issue a partial certificate of conformity as the car has the wrong seatbelts and fog light. I can see lots of posts of various websites about fitting the fog-light to Japanese imports but does anyone know if there is a kit you can buy. As for the seatbelts I haven’t seen anything so any advice people have would be most useful.
Oh one more thing
When I asked for “Attestation” from Mazda France I had to go to local Dealer in Bergerac to get certificate to say lights met E and mazda spec. I had to send this to Mazda F before they issued “Attestation”. So make sure fog light is e marked.
Best of luck with belts, MX5 parts do them (Mazda parts) but not cheap.
