I apologise for posting a duplication message, but can not ‘find’ the replies to my original enquiry:
Although well cared for, my 2004 MX5 Sport exhibits light 'ish chassis rail corrosion. I have removed the undertray and front inner wings to reveal the front sections of the rails to be quite sound. I am anxious to get this problem ‘fixed’ , with the MOT due in early November. I have been advised of a company in Leicester, but can’t recall their name. Is anyone able to vouch for their capabilities and/or recommend a company close to Towcester, Northants who might effect a good repair?
My son had his Mk2.5 rear rails done there recently and he was very happy with the work. Think they do MOT’s as well so you can get a year of comfort at the same time. They are in East Goscote so easy to access from the A46 road around the top of Leicester.
I’ve spent over £3000 with Thrussington having welding restoration done on 2 MX5s, plus a lot on routine servicing work; cambelts, waterpumps etc. . Warning, Mike can be pretty busy, so if you are going to use him before November, I would get your skates on, if you are planning to get the car mot’s elsewhere. On the other hand, you can just leave the car with hme, and let him deal with the MOT as needed. As he also races MX5s, or is supporting several teams, he’s sometimes not available at weekends.
saz9961,
Thanks once again. My intention is to give Thrussington a call first thing tomorrow, i.e. Monday 23rd., and hopefully talk to Mike, with a view to getting the car booked in for the necessary work.
Many thanks to those of you who recommended me to Thrussington Garage, East Goscote, Leics. for chassis rail repair work. I have now had the work carried out and have to congratulate Mike and Sam for their quality of work and friendliness. I particularly appreciated and ‘liked’ Mike’s approach of a fixed price, irrespective of the condition of the rails. Mike retained the old rail sections for me to inspect and it is now obvious to me as to how the sections corrode. Mine were category ‘5’ - not as bad as many, but timely action.
As an aside, when I mentioned the gear-change issue, from 1st., to 2nd., Mike suggested products which he stocks and uses. My MX is going for it’s MOT on 30th. October and I am having all oils changed then. I’ll post my experience with the oil and additive.

To conclude my experience with front rail repair work by Thrussington Garage. My car has now past it’s MOT , with flying colours. Thanks, once again, for all your help on this matter.
Raymond Harper,
Mike at Thrussington injected cavity wax into the whole chassis rail(s) as part of the rework. Mike explained that with the front ‘bumper’ / ‘valence’ removed , it is possible to feed the ‘lance’ into the complete length of the rails(s). From inspecting the underside of the car, during the MOT /Service work, my plan is to attend to the whole underbody next spring. In the meantime, I’ll attempt to only use the car, during the winter months, when I’m really forced to and always hose down the underside at the end of the journey. Something that I’ve done throughout the whole of it’s life / my ownership.
