It’s nearly insurance time on my K plate Mk1 Eunos. At the moment it is covered on an Admiral Multicar policy along with my Volvo, but i’m wondering if insuring them seperately, with the MX5 on a classic policy, will be a cheaper way to go.
With this in mind, is it possible to get classic cover for an MX5 that isn’t garaged and would be used occasionally to get to work when the Volvo was off the road? Or do all classic policies ban commuting to work and requiring a car to be gaarged?
It might be worth talking to Admiral as when I insured mine by adding to a multi car the Guy on the phone said they had started doing classic car policies. Mine is not old enough to qualify and I can’t remember how old the car needs to be-didn’t take all that much notice as my classics are all over thirty so qualify.
I called the insurer (R&H I think) of my classic (1986 RX7) and they were fine about the lack of garage. They also said the “no commuting” clause was to avoid the car being left in a trainstation car park all day and that using it to drive to work would be fine.
Footman James offered me a choice of two classic car policies; one with a 5000 mile limit, and for £70 more, unlimited miles. No garage, and fine for commuting. I’m on limited miles, but, if during the year, I think I might exceed that, I just pay the £70 supplement. You don’t earn NCB on these policies. This is using the MX5OC’s policy.
