A good read if you haven’t already seen it.
Nice review and an intresting point about the brakes, I am sure S-VT brakes would make alot of difference.
If I was four of five inches shorter I’d not hesitate to get Madge done, but since I can’t see myself getting on with the roll bar with out wearing a helmet I’ll stick to the 136hp I have with longing eyes
^^^^^^ Ditto. I’m always taken by how good the standard brakes are considered fine for most conditions. Yes they can be improved but it nice to spend elsewhere more effectively bang for buck.
@Art_Tidesco how tall are you? I’m 6’4” and when I fitted my roll bar I had to put FIA foam on it to protect my head. Then I swapped the stock seats for Elise ones and my head was nolonger anywhere near the bar. There’s always a work around.
I am looking at Elise seats at the moment, I am only 6’ 1’’ but having split a brand new Bell open against a foam protected roll bar in a minor racing incident in a 2CV back in 1990 I am hyper sensitive to having a roll bar fitted without a wearing a helmet. Sadly or otherwise I insist on being able to drive any car I compete in on the road as a daily driver and tourer. If I was to go the track car route I’d probably just invest in a dedicated racing vehicle.
I agree re the dangers of unpadded bars and short seats. I padded mine very thickly, essentially creating a bar-mounted headrest. It looked terrible though.
The beauty of Elise seats is they’re still much easier to get in and out of than buckets, so work for a road car. They’re also so thin that they create a lot more space in the car. I’d avoid the series 1 ones as they’re not as tall in the back/headrest. Comfort is subjective, but I found them comfortable over quite long distances once I’d got the angle right on the rails.
Thanks for the tips I have been told S2 are the ones to look out for. Look forward to extra space as I am running the slightly wider diameter Montana wood effect steering wheel in my S-VT
For hillclimb and sprint use any production car unmodified does not need a cage, though they are recommended, any production car modified does. I don’t think I’d get away with running a Jag V6 powered Rocketeer as unmodified
Looks lovely and the article is a nice read. Classic Driver looks interesting too - lots of other free to read articles - including one on a different Rocketeer…
