Clean electronic ECU RPM signal

Good evening guys. I’m about to fit a Cartek Shift Light to my track based 06 NC. The wiring diagram is asking for a Clean Electronic ECU RPM signal. I’m going to fit it on the instrument cowl, can any one help with wire colour code going into the back of the instrument cluster. Or is there a better way. They do not recommend picking it up off one of the coils, which is what we used to doin the old days.
Stay safe guys
Mike

Without checking, I’d imagine that the IC get its RPM signal via CAN on the NC. You’ll probably have to take it from the sensor/PCM wiring…

:joy: was that French or Latin:tired_face: Thanks for the advice but it’s going to have to be plain English for me:roll_eyes:. It looks likely I’ll get an auto electrician to do this. I was looking for some information to help him before I ask. Will there be a colour code on a specific wire.
Thanks
Mike

You’ll probably have to get the signal straight from the sensor as it’ll be hard wired to the PCM then the PCM sends the RPM signal to the instrument cluster via a digital signal. If you post your VIN I can give you the crankshaft sensor wire colours.

Hi
you also need to know what voltage the shift light is requiring because directly of the crank sensor you will generally only get a 5v reference voltage as with most engine sensors

As for wiring it in any good auto spark will be able to sort out the wiring
general sensors are 3 wires , an earth - 12v - 5v reference
if whoever you go to cant answer you straight away then walk away as there not worth the hassle

Is it this one ?

If so it requires a 12v rpm signal which you wont get from a sensor
what i did notice is down the page is an obd plug adapter to wire it in that way
that would be your best bet

There isn’t a tacho signal. The MX5 NC Rev counter looks at the data lines on Canbus.

Don’t go digging around in the wiring. Pointless and it will only add unreliability.

Instead choose a better, quicker, easier way to do it!

Simply follow the Cartek installation instructions and use the OBD2 socket with their Canbus converter plug. Use the converter data sheet to make sure of the connections.

The OBD2 socket has +12V always there from the battery, and 0V, all you need for the shifter, no wiring surgery at all, and you can unplug the system and put it in another car. Just remember to unplug it when the car is not running to save the car battery.

Thanks guys. Yes it is the device how. I did not want to use the OBD reader as we use this to interface with a GoPro for telemetry. I looked at an OBD splitter but that wound service both devices, hence hard wire.
Will get the VIN number in the morning. Thanks for the help, the modern day car electronics way over my head.
Mike

The OBD2 splitter is required anyway to get at the +12V signal and keep the connector away from your knee!

Hi Richard, I’ve read that using a splitter will not share Can signals to 2 devices looking for the same information.
Mike

But you cant hard wire it into the sensor as thats only a 5v reference and you cant get a can bus signal from the ECU without the plug adapter as your shift light requires a 12v rpm signal which there isnt one from anything else in the cars wiring .

Is the display for the GoPro not looking at RPM? If it was you could share that output from your existing OBD2.

If you really want to do surgery, then there is a set of reasonable signals driving the ignition coil switches, 5V positive pulses from the PCM connector. The shifter is happy with 5V or 12V pulses.
pin 2BA no1 coil
pin 2AW no2 coil
pin 2AX no3 coil
pin 2AT no4 coil
Personally I would not be disturbing these, even with a padding resistor to protect the MX5 systems.

We use a device in the OBD to superimpose RPM speed and so on onto the video the GoPro is taking.
The wiring description is showing an earth, switchable 12v, and a RPM signal. There is a forth but that’s optional for an alarm ie oil pressure alarm etc. Not sure where the 12v RPM signal is coming from? Or am I missing something

Good afternoon guys, can I revisit this topic please? It’s taken time and I did appreciate you previous comment and it was a great help.
I think finally I’ve found an auto electrician that will look at connecting the shift light. He is asking before he comes to try and get a pin out schematic for the ECU? The car is a 2006 2lt sport.
Thanks again guys
Mike
