Cloth Seats

The cloth seats in my Roadster could do with “brightening” up a bit and I was wondering if anyone has used this stuff at all, it comes in varying colours.     .http://www.fabricdyes.co.uk/fabric_design.asp?fabrictypeid=47#info

So are they claiming they can change the fabric from grey to yellow? Let me know if you try it as I’d love to do mine blue.

That looks like a paint rather than a dye. I can’t imagine that it would stand up to the wear that upholstery gets.

 Another one.    http://www.fabricspray.co.uk/upholstery-spray-paint

That’s just spray paint for fabrics, we’ve used it at school when making t shirt, decorating large fabric display work.

Surely it can’t be the same as you would spray your car with would it?

When you have used it at School what was your opinion of it? Do you think it would be any good to spray on the car seats to “freshen” them up?

I’ve only used the first one. That wouldn’t be at all suitable in a car. UNLESS you were spraying grafitti on your seats for kind of pattern.

As for the others. I’ve just watched the little video. I shouldn’t pass opinion as I haven’t used it BUT surely the old addage stands - you get what you pay for.

So you reckon it’s not very good then?

IMHO this is not suitable.

It is a paint rather than a dye. For decorative use on the front of a carefully worn shirt or jumper it would probably be OK but note that even silk screen printed finishes will crack and flake off eventually.

Upholstery is subject to high levels of wear compared to the front of a t-shirt. The fabric on seat covers bends and stretches when just about the entire body weight is placed on it and is subject to heavy abrasion as the occupants get in and out and slide over the seats. Fabric paint would not last 2 minutes on the facings of a car seat, even with moderate use.

A proper dye that is suitable for upholstery fabrics would be much better but even then I am not sure what issues there might be given the foam backing on the fabric on the facings and the PVC used for the back and sides.

Loads of threads about redying seats on miataforum.com. Generally; ok for reviving badly faded seats back to black, but they do make the fabric stiffer. Plenty have also used normal matt black car paint. I tried this years ago on a worn MX5 seat. it worked.

Did it flake off in use?

No, it absorbes into the cloth; trying painting your best shirt with some car paint, and see if it flakes off.

I have look into this a little bit further and the main issue here is that the upholstery fabric is made from synthetic (man-made) fibres, probably polyester or rayon. These fibres are very difficult to dye without resorting to a very high temperature industrial process which is highly impractical when the fabric has already been cut and sewn into a car seat cover.

It would seem that spray on paints for upholstery fabric are widely available and some claim to retain a soft feel to the fabric. I remain sceptical as to the durability of the finish but would be more than happy to be proved wrong as my own seats would definitely benefit from a refurb.
