Clunking/knocking sound from rear suspension

 Hello!
Whenever I make a right or left turn, I hear a loud clunk/knock noise from the rear of the car. This happens at low cornering speed, just going round a slight curve of a road, pulling into the drive, going over a hole in the road etc!
I think its happening in both right and left rear suspension, if I turn right, the right hand rear suspension knocks, and if i turn left, the left rear suspension knocks.
My boot is empty, so cant be that [:)]
Anyone else had this trouble? knackered bush or something?
 Thanks
EDIT: forgot to say, car is a 1991 1.6

Since it affects both sides only when turning in those directions, perhaps it might be to do with the sway bar, which is the only component that is connected to both left and right suspension.  I’d check the sway bar bushes that are mounted on the rear subframe, but really you need to get the car up, wheels off and have a good look round.  The suspension is not a terribly complicated set up after all.

Are you absolutely sure the battery clamp’s tight and the jack is clamped firmly in place under the carpet? [:D]

I’ve been trying to track down a clunky/creaking noise on my rear left for a while now. Last week I topped up the PAS fluid and, amazingly, the noise was all but gone! I don’t think the fluid was even below the low mark because I’ve checked it a couple of times since the noise started.

Mine is different in that it only happened when turning hard and I do still get a bit of noise when cornering with, err… enthusiasm, but I’m pretty much committed to treating the old girl to some new bushes anyway so am hoping that will put an end to the matter. The PAS fluid is a long shot but it’s a cheap thing to rule out at least.

I have the same problem the knocking sound is coming from the rear shock mounts. I first noticed it when i changed from new bump stops to power flex Polly foam as I was bottoming out running on standard springs and kyb agx shocks 1990 V SPEC AUTO. This mod caused the car to bounce even more. The answer is to change back to standard bump stops and to tighten up the shock top nut, the on on the shaft.

Just to update the thread, the problem was infact caused by one of the bushes on the anti roll bar drop link, it was allowing too much play and causing metal to metal contact between the drop link and the roll bar itself. Replaced the bushes for polybushes and the noise has gone, the car also rides so much better over rough surfaces.
