Cobalt exhaust fittings

Hi all,

Just taken delivery of a shiny new Cobalt exhaust for my NB but there are no fittings in the box and the ones on the car are corroded.

What do I need to get in order to fit it?

Thanks

Hopefully there is an O ring gasket in the bottom of the box (perhaps hidden under the flap). If not you can get one from MX5 Parts. You will also need 3 rubber hangers and probably two bolts to join the box to centre section, after you have given up trying to undo the old bolts and cut them off. Its easier to stanley knife old rubber hangers off rather than trying to slip them off. Have fun!!!

Thanks for the reply.

Do you know what size bolts I need?

Not off hand but the length is easily measured as the existing bolts are right at the back just under the rear bumper.

Diameter wise the bolts just need to fit through the two holes in the plate of the new exhaust, none of the holes are not threaded inside.

I replaced mine Saturday morning.Had a bit of a job separating the nuts off the bolts but got there in the end. Borrowed a couple of bolts off a neighbour to start with, then went to Swansea Fasteners and got a pair of stainless ones. The hangers slipped off easily enough, and a bit of washing up liquid helped get the new ones on. Good luck,it’s well worth doing

Just measured the old bolt. 45mm overall length. M10, with 17mm head.If you can, soak yours in wd40 several times for a day or two before trying to undo them.

When I did mine, I couldn’t get the nuts off the old silencer (mk3), they were rusted to a point that they rounded off as soon as I put the socket on.

I ended up taking the car down to a small back street place and paid a tenner to have the nuts cracked off.

The car sounded beefy on the way home

Thanks for the help guys.

She’s having an MOT tomorrow so I’ll get the guys to fit it for me then. Looking forward to the noise

Fitted mine to my Mk1, came from Moss on offer and included all the nuts bolts and gaskets. Still sounds wonderful!

Hoping to mine this weekend

Its a used SS exhaust - cat back - I have bought a new gasket to go on the back of the cat - should I put some paste on the joint or leave it dry ?

If I remember correctly I left mine dry as I fitted a new cat as well, something to do with the paste contaminating the cat. I assume your exhaust is in one piece otherwise you will need bolts & a gasket for the join. Good luck with the fitting not difficult but awkward if you have brace bars at the back as mine does.

I have the brace bar but I oiled it up last weekend and checked that the nuts would come off

Also got a pit in garage floor so shouldn’t be too difficualt

Old exhaust is one piece. New one is too pieces but one bit slides inside the other so I need some gunge on where they join - just wasn’t sure about the cat flange joint - will leave it dry then and see what it does

So, after a few weeks of the new exhaust fitted, it sounds awesome!

Particularly when you go over 4000 rpm!

Thanks for the help with fixings etc
